Pugs are very popular these days. They are favorite dogs of experienced dog owners and those who are looking for their first dog. They are small, appealing, and look amazing. All of this made them a dog breed to choose in 2022. Pugs originated in China in the 8th century. In this article we will go trough 12 things you need to know about Pugs.

12 Things You Need To Know About Pugs

1- You Can Keep Your Dog In A Small Apartment

As you know already, Pugs are small dogs. Thanks to this, they can be kept in a small apartment. In reality, they will feel great in any home or apartment, and they will enjoy spending time indoors.

Of course, they need and like to spend time outside as well, but not as much as other dog breeds.

2- They Are Small And Heavy

You may believe that pugs are small and lightweight. This isn’t true. As a matter of fact, this dog breed can reach 16 pounds. It doesn’t sound like much, but keep in mind that a Papillon will weight 9 pounds. A Shih Tzu will reach only 5 pounds.

As you can see, Pugs are small but heavy. They are still easy to carry around.

3- Pugs Are Royal Rogs

It is a less-known fact that a pug in 1572 saved the life of a prince of Holland. He warned the prince of incoming attackers.

Another interesting fact is that Josephine Bonaparte (some of you will know that she was the wife of famous Napoleon) had a pug as well. Throughout history, pugs were royal dogs commonly seen among respected families.

4- They Shed, But Not Too Much

Yes, these dogs will shed, so if you are looking for a hypoallergenic dog, you should look somewhere else. But they have short hair, meaning maintenance is low.

They need to be groomed once per week, and that’s it. In general, the level of maintenance is simple and effortless.

5- They Are 100% Original And Unique.

Those of you who want a unique dog that doesn’t look like any other breed will like pugs. These dogs are completely different than any other breed, and they will help you get a lot of positive comments and questions every single time you go for a walk.

Some dog owners don’t like this, but most of you do.

6- Pugs Are Excellent With Kids

These dogs love kids, and they will play all the time together. It is almost impossible to make a pug angry. This is one of the main advantages for people with children, obviously.

There is no need to be concerned or to look for another dog breed if you already like this one and you have kids. The two will become best friends in a matter of days.

things to know about pugs

7- Pugs Will Play All The Time

If you are looking for a dog to play with, this breed may be the answer. They love to play, and they will play all the time with you or even alone.

But, once you are done playing, they are still friendly enough to come to you and enjoy a nap. This made pugs very desirable pets.

8- Snoring Is Common

These dogs snore. In reality, they snore a lot and this can be a huge problem for some owners. Don’t forget that your friend will want to sleep with you. On the other hand, this isn’t a big deal for most owners.

They snore due to the shape of the face and the airways, among other reasons.

9- These Dogs Are affordable

Those of you who are looking for an affordable friend will love pugs. These dogs are extremely affordable and probably one of the cheapest dog breeds to buy.

Compared to a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, this dog is almost three times cheaper! Despite the fact that they are still great friends and excellent companions, they are not expensive to maintain and keep.

10- Training To Use A Bathroom Is Complicated

You can train a pug to use a bathroom or to alert you when he wants to go outside. However, you will need at least six months to successfully train him. Even then, they are not known for alerting you immediately.

All of this means that accidents inside the house may occur. Some of you will say that the situation is the same with all other pets, but this isn’t the case. Pugs simply require more time to learn these things, and you will have to start when they are small.

11- Your Dog Will Need You A Lot

Pugs want to spend time with you, and they will want to do it as much as possible. Although this sounds great, it can be time-consuming and even annoying when you want to rest.

Sadly, your new friend won’t be able to understand that, so he will start chewing and scratching.

The best thing you can do is to spend more time. Pugs are ideal for people who want to spend as much time as possible with their pets.

12- Pugs Have A Few Health Issues

Pugs have a few problems with their health. First of all, their eyes can get infected. After all, the eyes are big. They can get injured easily as well, due to their size and position.

The shape of the nose and face in general limits the air that can easily get to the airways. As such, you need to walk or exercise with your dog when the temperature isn’t very high. Also, be careful when your dog is active.

The Final Word

These are 12 things you need to know right now before getting a pug, and each one is important. They can help you make up your mind and make the right decision.

Pugs are great dogs, but they still come with pros and cons, like any other dog. At least now you know whether these cons are a huge problem for you or a small one you can overlook.

The best thing you can do is spend more time. Pugs are ideal for people who want to spend as much time aspossible with their pets.
