We all know that dogs just love peeing on the carpet. Well, not all, but many of them do. If you have this problem, you will need a solution. How to keep dogs from peeing on carpet using simple and effective methods is your question, probably. Well, there are few things you can do if this happens to you. Below are all the methods and tricks that work well every single time.

Understanding Why Dogs Pee on Carpet

Before we discuss how to prevent dogs from peeing on carpet, it’s important to know why they do it. The main reason why dogs may pee on carpet due to a variety of reasons, including:

  • Marking their territory
  • Anxiety or stress
  • Medical issues such as a urinary tract infection or incontinence
  • Lack of proper training or reinforcement

9 Tips to Keep Dogs from Peeing on Carpet

Retrain Your Dog

See, all of the methods we will list below will help you, and they work great. But the best thing you can actually do for your pet is to retrain him. Make sure you help him understand that peeing on the carpet is not acceptable behavior. It is bad behavior, and you need to change that. How can I keep dogs from peeing on the carpet?

Train him to pee outside only. In some cases, you can do this all by yourself. But if your dog is stubborn and you don’t have a lot of time, you may need professional help.

Provide More Than Enough Potty Breaks

It is possible that you are too busy, and your dog forgets about potty breaks. Well, a dog will pee on the carpet as a result of that. The only thing you can do is give him plenty of potty breaks so he can pee outside or where he should. Keep in mind that puppies will pee every hour or every 2 hours. As they age, they will pee less. If your dog has some medical issue that makes him pee more often, provide him with more frequent potty breaks.

Vinegar Solution

You can make a water and vinegar solution and spray it on the carpet. This works like magic. First of all, your dog will refuse to pee there. They don’t like this scent, and they will avoid it. If they avoid the carpet, they cannot pee on it. Just make sure that you spray the mixture on the area where a dog pees all the time. In most cases, a dog will pee on one spot only. Spray that spot and you will see the difference.

One thing we like about this method is the fact it removes urine scent as well. It is more than just effective; it works well on all carpets and with all dog breeds. The only issue here is that if you hate the smell of vinegar, you will hate this method.

Commercial Solutions

There are countless commercial solutions out there. All of these do the same thing as the vinegar above. But, these products may be safer to use, have a more pleasant scent, or are more efficient for your dog.

We do know that all of them have cinnamon or lemongrass in them. These are scents that dogs don’t like, and they will avoid the area that has them. You may have to try a few times before you get a product that works best in your situation.

Lemon Juice Is Effective As Well

All you have to do is mix lemon juice with water. Apply it to the carpet, and you are done. A dog will hate that smell, and he will not pee in that location. This is a basically similar method to vinegar and water but it is more pleasant and it can be equally effective.

Crate Him, When You Have To

Of course, we are referring to situations like when you are at work or not at home. You will need a crate. But, this method has been known for great results and it also protects your dog. There is no need to add that you must not leave your pet in a crate all day long. This is an effective method that works for a couple of hours.

This works because a dog will not pee inside a crate. He is too close to the spot, and he doesn’t want to pee, eat, or smell the urine in a crate. You can even use this method to help him understand that peeing on the carpet is not acceptable.

Don’t Allow Him To Get Used To this

This method is essential if you have adopted a new dog and want to train him. The first thing you will have to do is keep an eye on him at all times. Make sure you know when he will need a potty break. Before he needs one, take him outside.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

The goal here is to help him understand that peeing inside the house and on the carpet is not acceptable, and he must not do that. The last thing you want to see is your new dog getting used to peeing inside the house.

Provide Adequate Opportunities to Go Outside

Make sure your dog has plenty of opportunities to go outside and use the bathroom. Take them outside immediately after waking up, after eating or drinking, and after playtime.

Limit Your Dog’s Access

Limiting your dog’s access to areas with carpet can also help prevent your dog to pee on it. Close doors or use baby gates to keep your dog in areas with hard flooring, such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Don’t Punish Your Dog

It is important to add that if you yell at your dog or hit him when he pees on the carpet, The solution will become much easier to get. Your pet will be afraid of you, and he will pee on the carpet more often. This also makes the training less effective and more problematic. If you punish your dog, you will teach him one thing only. to be scared of you. Now you will have a dog who doesn’t love you.

The Final Word

Now you know all the methods that work well. How can I keep dogs from peeing on the carpet? Pick one method and try it. If your dog is really stubborn, try all of these methods and, more importantly, find which combination works best.

Within a few days or a week, your dog will not pee on the carpet anymore. Don’t forget that dogs can develop habits quickly, but they need a lot of time to eliminate them. same as humans. This means that your dog will need a lot of time to stop peeing on the carpet. Give him time and don’t stop.
