Have you ever asked yourself, what are the dumbest dog beeds? All dogs are adorable, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have entirely different personality traits depending on the breed. And, unfortunately, some dog breeds are just a little bit dumber than others.
That is by no means to say they’re stupid! Some of them are just a little bit loopier or harder to train than others. This list is based purely on that.
Top 9 Dumbest Dog Breeds In The World
Afghan Hounds
Afghan Hounds have often been listed as the dumbest dog breed in the world. This is because they’re pretty aloof by nature, can be ditsy at times, and are rather sensitive.
Despite this, they’re actually trained as hunting companions because of their incredible sight. They need a lot of exercise in fenced-in areas and are pretty independent by nature, so they are therefore rather difficult to train. (That is, they tend to ignore you a lot.)
Overall, they’re only called dumb because they’re a bit like fairies sometimes!
Basset Hounds
Basset Hounds are also notorious for being dumb because they can run away with themselves a bit. They’re obsessed with sniffing and can get a little bit lost in the moment when they’re found a trail they want to follow.
They’re pretty big dopes at heart but are super loveable too. They tend to be difficult to train because they were bred as hunting dogs and therefore fail to follow commands pretty often.
Beagles
Beagles are pretty popular dogs because they’re super friendly in nature and, not to mention, adorable. However, they still make the list of dumbest dog breeds despite this.
While they are somewhat trainable if you know how to do it, they’re still a bit ditsy in nature and are known for being friendly over their wit.
Borzoi
Borzoi are a funny breed of dog because they tend to exhibit behaviour more like cats rather than the traits we often associate with dogs. Borzoi’s are incredible clean and are funny because they make their new owners prove their worthiness.
This means they have to let the owner show that their worth the time of day before they start giving them attention back. That sounds pretty smart, right?
Well, the reason they’re considered one of the dumbest dog breeds is that they’re pretty independent and therefore rather hard to train.
Pekingese
Pekingese are awesome little companions but they’re not that quick-witted. They’re an ancient breed that descends from China and have ties to Budha.
The reason they’re considered one of the dumbest dog breeds is because they were literally bred for companionship. Unlike other breeds on this list that were bred to hunt, Pekingese were only bread to keep people company and be loyal. So while that might make them a bit dumb, it also means they’re super loving.
Chow Chow
Chow Chow’s are huge balls of fluff that are probably one of the oldest breeds of dogs. They’re pretty aloof and quiet but really friendly in nature.
The reason they’re considered dumb is that they’re actually too smart. I know, it doesn’t make sense. But the Chow Chow is actually super brainy because it was bred to guard, protect and hunt.
Therefore sometimes they get a bit caught up in themselves and tend to ignore cues or instructions meaning they’re generally quite difficult to train.
Bull Dog
Bull Dogs are known for being goofy and friendly, not smart.
Originally, bulldogs were notorious for being fierce and a bit aggressive. That couldn’t be any more different now though as these dopey little friends are nothing if not loveable. They’re thought of as dumb because they’re so dopey in nature.
Bull Terrier
Bull terriers are adorable little guys too but they’re known to be the toddler of dog breeds. They’re super silly in nature, keen to please and really active.
While they are pretty dopey making them one of the dumbest dog breeds, they’re surprisingly easy to train and are good for agility because they’re so active.
Shih Tzu
Shih Tzu’s are fantastic companions if you’re after a calm, sweet-natured dog to join your home.
They’re not known to be the sharpest tool in the shed though and can be a little bit ditsy in nature. They are rather quick to learn but tend to lack focus so aren’tt the easiest to train.
