If you are reading this, it means that your puppy won’t poop outside and you have a problem. So what should you do? Keep in mind that all puppies at 12 weeks of age are old enough to be potty trained. Younger puppies are not ready for this, and they don’t have bowel control like older ones. This means they cannot hold it. As such, this article is suitable for dog owners whose puppies are aged 12 weeks or older.

Why Your Puppy Only Poops Inside The House?

Keep in mind that there are a lot of reasons why your puppy won’t poop outside. He will wait to get inside the house, and then he will do his business. The reasons why he does this are versatile, but we will share the most common ones with you.

First of all, if it is cold or rainy outside, your puppy will prefer to poop inside the house. It is obvious. He doesn’t like cold weather or rain, and he is far more comfortable inside. This obviously happens only when the weather is bad.

Some puppies don’t like grass feeling or smell so they will once again, poop inside the house. Others don’t like the smell of the environment, which will have the same end result. In general, they don’t feel comfortable enough outside to relax, so they will wait to get inside the house.

An interesting explanation is that a puppy knows that once he poops, you will bring him inside. He made the connection that every time he poos, he won’t be able to play outside, and his time for playing will be over.

25 Budget-Friendly Tips Every Dog Owner Should Know

January 6, 2025

If you have trained your puppy to poop or pee inside, he will obviously do this. The most common mistake is when owners use pee pads. As such, puppies will be linked to peeing and pooping inside, where they were taught, and they will refuse to poop outside.

Teach Your Puppy To Poop Outside

Yes, you can teach your puppy to poop outside and the process is very simple, but it does require a lot of time. Below we will reveal and explain the best and the most guide and a few more things you can use to train your puppy to poop outside.

Take Him Outside When He Wants To Poop

This sounds obvious, and it is. The problem is when your puppy wants to poop. Well, you will need to figure it out. He will likely make a few circles around a place where he wants to poop. This is the most common sign.

Puppies poop between 1 and 5 times per day. If you feed them more and you give them more treats, they will poop even more. In essence, they poop after each meal (usually 30 minutes after), after playtime, after a nap, and in the morning. You can take notes, which will help you realise when your puppy wants to poop.

Use Crate Training

This is one of the simplest things you can do. All you have to do is keep your puppy inside a cage. They love this due to the fact that they feel safe and comfortable. But they won’t poop inside the crate. Now, when you think he wants to poop or the time is just right, take him outside, straight out of a crate. It can be one of the best and most effective methods. If your puppy is free to roam around the house, he will poop anywhere he can.

Take Your Puppy Inside

When you know when your puppy will poop, take him outside. Always use a leash it makes things much easier. Walk him a bit and then find a place where you want him to poop. Give him a command such ‘’poop’’ or anything else. It is mandatory that the commands are the same every single time when you use them. If he does the job, praise him. Do not go inside the house immediately.  A puppy will link pooping with going inside and he will hold it the next time.

Always Use An Enzymatic Cleaner

When he poops inside the house, use an enzymatic cleaner to wipe it off and clean the area perfectly. This solution eliminates the smell completely so your puppy won’t associate that place with pooping. This is precisely what you are trying to do.

Spend A Lot Of Time Outside

This point is effective, and it can help you get the job done in less time. What this means is that if you two spend a lot of time outside, he will likely poop outside. After each meal, take your puppy for a walk. These walks should start at 5 minutes when your puppy is very small and reach 30 minutes once he is older.

The tip here can help you get two benefits. Your puppy will become more comfortable with the environment, and he will likely want to poop outside. The second benefit is that your puppy needs and deserves outside time, so you are giving him precisely what he wants.

Keep in mind that puppies don’t like loud noises and specific smells that are common outside. They feel vulnerable when they poop, and mixed with the just mentioned issues, this can be a reason why they will hold it.

Do The Same When It’s Cold and Rains

It is important to add that you should use the same things regardless of the time. If it rains or it is cold outside, put a pair of boots on your pet, take a coat and go outside. It is important to help them realize rain is not their enemy or something scary and that they must poop outside despite the weather.

Conclusion

If your puppy won’t poop outside now you know what to do. In essence, they are uncomfortable and they don’t like it. By eliminating the comfort issues, your puppy will start pooping outside on a daily basis. Use the tips and all the points we have covered above and you will get the job done in no time.
