Here we have one rare issue that can happen at any given moment. When it happens, you won’t know what to do. Your dog will act strange. My dog is acting like he’s tripping is not a good thing. There are a few explanations for this cause and we will explain each one. Keep in mind that some of these can be severe and will need help from a vet.

Why My Dog Is Acting Like He’s Tripping? Main Reasons.

1. Due To Drugs

Believe it or not, this is a common issue and one you have to know about. My dog is acting like he’s tripping? Why does he do that? Because he is. It is possible that your dog finds a stash of your drugs or he can find some at a park. If he eats them, he will end up high.

If this happens to your dog he will show certain signs. Drooling, acting like he is chasing something, and dilated pupils are the most common. Luckily most dogs when this happens end up just fine and they don’t have any side effects. You may still want to take him to a vet. You don’t know which drugs are in his system and some of them can be deadly or at least very dangerous.

2. He is Hearing Something

Try to remember that dogs can hear 4 times better than you. This means that if you don’t hear something, your dog might. They react to different sounds differently. Some dogs will look scared, others will search for something and a third will even look at the direction of the sound and want to do something. There are countless possibilities.

If this is the case with your dog you will notice one thing. He will act weird as long as there is sound present. Once the sound ends, he will act normally. There is no need to do anything and you don’t have to worry about any issues or complications. This is a one –time thing and it is harmless. It just looks weird and more severe than it actually is.

3. Your Dog Has Hallucinations

If your dog acts strangely like he is seeing something, a hallucination may be the cause. Seizures, fly-snapping syndrome, canine epilepsy, and many other issues can cause hallucinations and none of these is a good thing. It is also possible that Vestibular disease is present. Sadly, it is a severe disease and your dog will see the entire world upside down. You need to take him to a vet as soon as possible.

It can be hard or even impossible for you to tell when hallucinations are present. Some can last a few seconds only while others will last much longer. This issue looks the same as many others here so it is even harder to diagnose it. Just keep in mind that if hallucinations are present your pet will see something that is not there so you can try and use this symptom as the first sign that something severe is happening.

4. Brain Tumor

These are not extremely common but they can happen, usually in older dogs. The symptoms, signs, and all the rest depend on the position and the size of the tumor. Some can make your dog lose balance while others can cause severe changes in his behavior. Hallucinations are possible. There is no way we can generalize all of this. You have to take him to a vet as soon as you can. The tumor will grow over time hence it will cause even more problems and it can cause all kinds of complications.

Some of the more common symptoms include pacing, the flickering of the eyes, head tremors, and also lack of coordination.

5. Fly-Snapping Syndrome

Fly-Snapping Syndrome is a severe issue and it means that your dog has seizures, epilepsy, or problems with the eyes. For instance, he can have dark spots in the eyes so he can believe that those are flies and he will want to snap one. The worst thing here is that this issue is hereditary.

For lack of a better word, you need to take him to a vet and you need to start treatment if possible. This is not one of those conditions or disorders that will last a few days and go away. It is one of those that are a huge threat to a dog and can cause all kinds of other issues and complications.

What You Should Do?

This behavior is far from normal and far from harmless. As you were able to see, all of these issues can be very severe and your dog needs a lot of help. If this happens once and your dog is fine after a couple of minutes you don’t have to worry. It can be because he ate something or that he heard something that made him act weird. These are actually the most common issues here and the ones that affect many dogs at some point.

But, if your pet has been tripping for a long period of time or he constantly has episodes where he sees something that is not present or he acts weird in any other sense of the word, take him to a vet. Many conditions and diseases are much easier to treat when you start soon. If you are too late, they will develop and progress. What this means is that the issue will be much harder to treat and solve.

The Final Word

My dog is acting like he’s tripping is one of those issues you will want to know about. It is not a common thing but it can happen at any given moment without any warnings. Once it happens, you will have to act as soon as possible. Most of the causes can be severe and can affect the brain and the neurological system in general. What this means is that the risk of complications is massive and always present.
