Why Is My Dog so Obsessed With The Newborn Baby? is it ok to Have a Dog Around a Newborn Baby? How he will behave and why he does certain things? All of these are questions new parents, who are dog owners have on their minds. Today, we are going to answer all of them and we will also include additional things you need to know.

Why Is My Dog Obsessed With The Newborn Baby?

Let’s answer the first question. Dogs may be obsessed with newborn babies due to several reasons. First of all, this is a thrilling time in their life and they are almost as happy as you are. They may follow you and the baby all the time. Keep in mind that dogs have genetic predispositions to protect their pack. A baby is the newest addition to the pack so most dog breeds will want to keep the baby safe.

That’s why he will bark when someone comes to the house. Add the fact a dog will be interested in a baby, how it looks, moves, and sounds she makes and you can see why this obsession is common.

Is it safe to keep these two together?

The answer is yes and no. Ideally, you will wait a few weeks before you introduce the baby to a dog. Some dogs may be jealous and they may injure the baby, accidentally of course. Make sure you introduce the baby to your dog safely and with plenty of time. Always stay focused and make sure there is no room for accidents here. In addition, raising a baby in a home where dogs are present comes with many benefits.

Present new smells to your pet first

You should present baby powder, crèmes, and anything else that is going to be used after your baby comes to the dog. That’s why he can get used to those smells and he won’t behave differently when the times come. It is a simple, obvious, and very important thing to do.

Train him specific commands

Your dog must learn specific commands. These are sit, stay, drop it and leave it. Of course, these commands are going to be used extremely commonly once your baby comes, and as such your dog must know them by heart at any given moment. Start training your dog months before childbirth.

Mimic the behavior of a baby

To see how your pet will behave around a baby, become a baby. Pull his ears, press his nose and cuddle him ‘’roughly’’. You can watch videos and see how babies act around dogs so you should do the same. This will give you answers will a dog hurt your baby or he will tolerate it completely.

Get a lifelike doll

Most experts claim that a lifelike doll can be the best way to introduce a baby to a dog. Get a nice and expensive, realistic doll and act like that’s your baby. You will see your pet confused at first but he will get used to it. Now, the transition is spectacular and simple.

Use help all the time

You are going to need help as much as you can. Your husband, wife, mother, father, or anyone else needs to be there. Let’s face it, you are going to do countless actions all the time, hence help is needed.

Let the dog smell the blanket

When you bring the baby home from a hospital, let the dog smell the blanket. This is used to let the pet learn a lot using his powerful sense of smell and also to become familiarized with that smell.

Don’t treat the dog differently

It is important not to yell, ignore or forget about your dog once the baby arrives. This will have a huge, negative effect and can make your dog extremely jealous, angry, or something even worse. The goal is to behave around your dog as closely as possible to the time when he was alone in the house with you. Of course, some changes are mandatory so make sure they are applied slowly and with care.

Learn to do 2 things at the same time

You are going to need to do two things at the same time. The best example is having two babies at the same time in the same room. Many say that dogs are like babies so you can get a better idea about this point. You need to feed, bathe, care and so much more about both of these all the time. Get used to it.

Reward a dog when he behaves well

When your dog behaves well and he does a good thing, reward him. When he behaves differently, remove him from that room. Do not yell at him or punish him in any other way. Chances are high that he will become upset and angry.

Don’t let these two from your sight

All the time you need to have on your eyesight your dog and your baby. As we have mentioned, accidents may happen, so you need to be present and act as soon as it is needed. Child safety comes first!
