Yes, there are psychological tricks that work on dogs and they are more than just effective as you may believe. Today we will reveal them and we will help you understand how to use these to your advantage. What are some psychological tricks that work on dogs and should you use them? Today you will find out and you will see which tricks are the most effective and why.

Psychological Tricks That Work On Dogs

  • Classical Conditioning

This is one of the simplest and most effective psychological tricks out there. What are some psychological tricks that work on dogs? Well, classical conditioning developed by Ivan Pavlov is probably the main one. In simple terms, this trick will connect a specific stimulus to a specific response.

Here is an example. If you walk your dog and you want him to pee so he doesn’t have to go outside immediately after you come inside, ring a bell every single time when he pees while outside. After some time, you can ring the bell and he will pee. This is such a ‘’strong’’ trick that most dogs will pee even if they don’t have to.

  • Using Primary And Secondary Reinforcement

This trick is super easy and it is more than just effective. See, when you want to train a dog, you will use one reinforcement. This would be a treat. When a dog does something, you tell him to do, you will give him the treat. This is good and works well in the beginning. But, after some time it may become useless and a dog will refuse to obey you. Therefore, you must use secondary reinforcement to keep the trick possible.

For example, when a dog obeys you, give him a treat and after some time tell him ‘’good boy’’. You can also give him praise or something else that a dog likes. Soon your dog will become very happy when you give him second reinforcement. This works well with stubborn dogs and pets who need a lot of time to learn a new trick.

  • Basic Needs Trick

All living creatures have a pyramid of needs. In dogs, for instance, the need for food, water, and touch has a huge role, and we can say that these are highly ranked in the pyramid. We can also see that this refers to most animals. According to Abraham Maslow, a psychologist, this is something you can use.

Pet your friend every single time he sits. After some time, try to issue the command “sit” and pet him only when he does this. Eventually, the dog will realise that when he does something you tell him to do, he will get a reward. This is a simple trick that you can use for all sorts of training and that is very effective.

  • Latent Learning Does Work Well

This is one trick that is known as latent learning. The goal here is to teach your dog to complete something without positive reinforcement. What this means is that he will have to complete an obstacle course or something similar, but you won’t give him a treat.

After some time, give him a treat. You will see how fast he can complete the same obstacle course. This trick is ideal if you want to prevent overfeeding and teach your dog to do something without a treat.

  • Multi-Step And Fixed Ratio Reinforcement Trick

This trick is a bit more complicated, but very rewarding. The goal here is to teach your dog to complete multiple tricks, and only then will he get the reward. The first thing you need to know is that you have to teach him basic commands first. Don’t start with this if your dog doesn’t know basic commands. He will be unable to complete the sequence.

The best example, in this case, is teaching your dog to sit and stay. Once he completes both of the commands, you will give him a reward, which is usually a treat. Start with this step and use it as a benchmark. Gradually increase the number of commands. In general, dogs must complete three commands before receiving a reward. Then you will increase the number of commands up to 5, and so on. There is no way you can teach a dog to complete 100 commands, but most of them can complete a few of the commands easily.

The Final Word

What are some psychological tricks that work well on dogs? There are five of them here that were developed by professionals and have been used for decades by trainers. The best thing about these tricks is that each one is relatively simple compared to the benefits it offers. You can use all of them, and you will end up with a dog that looks and acts special, for lack of a better word.
