Dogs can get restless more than we would like to see. Then, they will act weird which is obvious. Why is my dog acting weird and restless you may wonder? What should you do when that happens? We will answer both questions below. There are many causes that can produce this behavior and there are a few things you must do. Let’s start.

Main Reasons A Dog Is Acting Weird And Restles

Fear or Phobia

My dog is acting weird and restless due to phobia. Fear is a common thing. Simply said, this can happen due to any fear or something that will care for your pet. It can happen due to phobia which is an extreme level of fear from something, usually not that dangerous.

The best example is a storm. Many dogs are scared of storms, fireworks, or similar, loud noises. When he hears them, he will become restless. He won’t know what to do or how to protect himself. Some dogs usually hide in these situations.

Separation Anxiety

This happens when your pet is very much attached to you. Then you leave him (you must go to work for instance). He will become restless within 15-30 minutes. This is a problem. He may chew your furniture, start barking, etc. He will certainly act weird and become restless as well. You should help your pet to overcome this issue.

Toxins

If a dog eats toxic food or chemicals, he will become restless. The best example is chocolate. There is no need in telling you that chocolate is extremely dangerous to dogs and it can kill them. If he eats chocolate, he will show signs of poisoning.

This can last a couple of days. It is mandatory to take him to a vet as soon as possible. Restless paired with excessive panting are the two first signs to look for. You can see the evidence left behind such as the wrapping of the chocolate. This treat for humans can kill a dog!

Ticks and Fleas

These can cause restless behavior in all dogs. As you can assume, a dog will lick, scratch or bite the affected area. But, if there is an infection, pain, or something even worse present, he will also become restless. He may wine or act completely strange. Examine your dog and try to eliminate these parasites. Ampules for this purpose work the best. Keep in mind that cheap ones may not work at all!

Cushing’s Disease

Cushing’s Disease can affect dogs. It will occur when the endocrine glands are affected and produce too much cortisol. This is a stress hormone and it can fight off inflammation. The disease will create an imbalance in the body and will cause restless behavior and many other symptoms. This can happen when a dog has issues with the pituitary gland, adrenal tumors, and even if he got too many corticosteroids.

Tapeworms

These are parasites and they have flat heads. They can infect all dogs of all ages but are more common in puppies. In puppies, these can cause slower growth and, in some situations, even anemia. Tapeworms are not as dangerous as they may look. But they can cause blockage and all kinds of other issues in the intestines of a dog. This will make him restless, sad, and in massive discomfort.

Of them all, flea tapeworm is the most common. It can infect the intestine of a dog if a dog eats fleas. You need to take him to a vet.

What Should You Do About It?

The first thing you should do is to determine the cause of the issue. It can be a huge issue or it can be a minor problem. There is no way to generalize that. Anyway, if the ticks are a problem, you should remove them using the ampule. The same goes for fleas.

But, if your dog has a medical condition, you will have to take him to a vet. Most of these diseases and issues can be treated successfully. For example, if your pet has tapeworms, a simple medication will help him. Some diseases are more severe and they do need a more complicated and longer treatment.

In the case of a toxin, your vet will induce vomiting of your dog. This is the first thing he will do. He will also try to eliminate the toxin as soon as possible. There are a lot of methods for that and a lot of useful medications. In this case, it is important to start the treatment as soon as possible. If you start too late, your dog may not survive the exposure to the toxin.

Cushing’s Disease is complicated. A dog may need surgery in order to remove the tumor or correct the issue of a gland.

We cannot generalize this matter. Some medications can be used as well. Your vet will have to perform countless exams in order to determine the cause of the disease.

Not all is black here. We can see that separation anxiety can cause restless behavior as well. You will have to train your pet to help him overcome this problem. If fear and phobias are the cause, you will need to deal with them. The goal here is to teach your pet that a storm is not dangerous and that he will be just fine. There are several types of training that are helpful. Of course, you will have to start the remedy once you know the cause.

The Final Word

Why is my dog acting weird and restless all the time? In the lack of a better word, he has a problem. It can be pain, discomfort, or disease. There are many causes here, as you were able to see. Your first step is to determine the one that makes your pet restless. After that, you can start treatment and help your pet. A good thing here is that most of these causes are not very severe and they can go away within days.
