Dogs can suffer from all kinds of issues. Diarrhea is just one of them and we must add a common problem for some dogs. My dog has diarrhea but is acting fine is one of the very common issues here. We will have to explain the matter completely so you can get a better understanding of why this happens and what you should do about it.

Chronic and Acute Diarrhea In Dogs

Diarrhea can occur in dogs due to many reasons, more on that later. But there are two main types of this issue. The first one is chronic diarrhea. This means that your dog will suffer from diarrhea frequently. My dog has diarrhea but is acting fine is usually the problem with chronic diarrhea but not always. Anyway, this means that the dog’s stomach is sensitive or there is some problem with the digestive tract. It is wise to visit a vet and try to find the cause of it.

Acute diarrhea is a more severe issue. It can just happen at any given moment. There are many reasons and explanations for why this happens. If a dog eats some plant or stool from another animal diarrhea is a common issue.

Here’s What You Should Do

If your pet has diarrhea but he is acting just fine, usually there is no reason to worry about it. This can last a couple of hours or even the whole day but your dog is still eating just fine and he has plenty of energy. He is not lethargic and he drinks plenty of water. Just keep your eye on the dog and monitor his condition. It will likely improve soon.

If your dog has diarrhea for a couple of days, he refuses to eat and drinks water, you should take him to the vet immediately. It is also a good idea to take him to the vet if he drinks and eats but the diarrhea is still present. A vet will examine your dog and determine the cause.

This simply means that if diarrhea goes away after a day the cause was mild and not severe. If it lasts for days and your dog starts acting worse, it means that there is a more severe cause of it. Dogs can get diarrhea countless times per month so usually, there is nothing to worry about.

Diarrhea Symptoms

You all believe that diarrhea symptoms are well-known and there is no need to explain them. Well, this is not true. There are many things you need to know here. The first and the most common thing here is the look of stool when a dog has diarrhea. It will be explosive, loose, and frequent. This is one symptom we are all aware of.

Straining is another sign that you should pay attention to. A dog will try to poop but he will be unable to do it. There is nothing inside. He feels like he must go but the intestines are empty. The gastrointestinal system is affected hence this causes the behavior here.

Diarrhea can cause other symptoms as well. Some of the most common are lethargy, dehydration, fever, and massive loss of appetite. As you can assume, your dog doesn’t feel well hence he will lie down all day long and he will be sad.

Causes of Diarrhea In Dogs

Yes, we must reveal the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs. There are many of them so you will need some time to read these. Diarrhea is common and it means that the digestive tract of a dog has a problem. Why does it have a problem? Let’s find out.

  1. Dog eats something that will upset his large and small intestine. As a result, we can see diarrhea. This can happen when he eats the stool of another animal, plant, or something that will affect the digestive tract.
  2. Viral and also bacterial infections can prevent a dog’s digestive tract from absorbing needed nutrients. As a result we have diarrhea.
  3. Certain parasites can lodge into the digestive tract and cause diarrhea. This requires treatment.
  4. Inflammation of pancreatitis or pancreatitis if you prefer can and will cause diarrhea. Your dog needs immediate treatment and a vet must examine him as soon as possible.
  5. Poisoning can cause diarrhea. A dog eats some food with poison or comes in contact with poison (detergent, cleaning solution, chemicals, etc.) and as a result, we can see diarrhea. It is a severe issue.
  6. Severe food allergies can cause diarrhea as well. These can cause IBS and IBD if they are not treated.
  7. Blockage can cause diarrhea as well. This sounds strange but it can happen.
  8. When you introduce a dog to a new food or a new diet, diarrhea can occur. His digestive tract is not used to that food.
  9. Stress can cause diarrhea. Believe it or not, this can happen. Dogs can be under a lot of stress and it can cause diarrhea. You will need to do something about that stress and protect your dog. They are strong but not immune to stress.
  10. Many chronic diseases and illnesses can and will cause diarrhea. Some of the best examples are diseases that affect kidneys, digestive tract, and also hormonal imbalance. Intestinal ulcers and also colitis can cause diarrhea.
  11. Certain medications for dogs can cause diarrhea. Your vet will probably tell you about this side effect when he prescribes the medications.
