When it comes to feeding your pet you have two options. The first one is to purchase commercial food and feed your pet. It is a more common and easier approach. The second option is to cook and make food for your pet by yourself. Is homemade food better for dogs? The answer is not as simple as you can imagine. It is actually a bit difficult to explain.

Is Homemade Food Better For Dogs?

There is no other way to say this. Is homemade food better for dogs? Yes, and no. What this means is that you can see a lot of people claiming that homemade food is just better and healthier for dogs. This is not scientifically proven and honestly, there is no data or evidence that will suggest otherwise. If you get commercial, high-quality food for your dog, he will get all the health benefits he needs.

You can add healthy treats as well which will help him even more. In that case scenario, homemade food is not something you have to make for your pet. There is no need for that. If you get low-quality, cheap, or some commercial food that is just poorly made and there are not all the nutrients a dog needs, then homemade food is a much better option.

At the end of the day, we can deduce that homemade food is not a mandatory improvement nor extremely beneficial for a dog. It is something you may want to make for your pet but there is no real need for that. Just pick high-quality commercial food that is suitable for your dog and he will be fine.

Pros And Cons Of Homemade Food For Dogs

To better explain the situation, we can add the pros and cons of homemade food for a dog. If you like these advantages and you want to do it, you can. But, keep in mind that there are downsides as well and these can be very problematic in some cases.

Homemade Food for Dogs: Pros

One of the main advantages is the ability to get all the best nutrients you like. You can get organic food as well and get it from well-known suppliers. In general, you can choose the ingredients you lie and in commercial food, you cannot do that.

The next advantage that is also massive and always present is the cost. Making food for your dog can be cheaper than purchasing commercial foods. How much money you will save depends on the ingredients, how much your pet eats, and many other factors. But, in general, this is a more affordable way to feed your pet.

Making food for dogs can be fun. With proper tools, you don’t need a lot of time and you can complete the process within minutes. The best part is the fact you already have all the tools you are going to need.

If you make daily meals for a dog in your kitchen, he will always get the freshest meal out there. This is not something he can get from commercial food. He will probably eat the old food every now and then.

The last advantage is a simple satisfaction. Most dog owners would like to make food for their dogs. It can be fun and extremely rewarding. Just imagine your pet sitting in the kitchen and looking at you while you are making him a delicious meal.

Homemade Food for Dogs: Cons

There are some issues with this process. While you can get the best ingredients possible, you can also get the worst ones out there. This means that your dog will consume bad food that may contain bacteria, parasites, and all the rest.

Then you can make a mistake and not include a specific ingredient that your pet needs. Keep in mind that dogs need a lot of ingredients that will provide nutrients to them. If you miss one, you can cause nutrient deficiency which is almost the same as starvation!

A lot of research is mandatory in order to prepare a proper meal for your pet that will provide him with all the nutrients he actually needs. The situation is the same if you substitute some ingredients. You can again end up with a meal that is not suitable for your pet.

Most dogs who eat homemade food will never go back to commercial food. They just don’t like or want to eat that food. This can be a problem. You will have a dog who wants you to cook for him but you don’t have time to do that. Yes, he will eventually start eating commercial food but this can be a nightmare to correct. The situation is even worse if your dog is a picky eater.

Many people will change the recipe every now and then. You cannot find an ingredient you need, it is unavailable or you make a mistake. This means that the food may not be suitable for a dog. Once again, he can end up with a nutrient deficiency.

Some dogs eat a lot. This means that you will have to cook a lot and you will need a place to store that food. Keeping it in the fridge all the time and in massive amounts is usually not an option. You will need a special place to keep the food. If you live in a big house this won’t be a problem. If you live in an apartment, it can be an impossible task.

The Final Word

Let’s summarize all the things we have said here. Is homemade food better for dogs? It can be but not always. In some cases, it can be even dangerous. If you want to prepare food for your pet, you need a lot of research, to learn how to prepare it and which ingredients to use.

Even then, the benefits are not massive and dogs will be perfectly fine when eating commercial foods. As such, there are no massive reasons why you would prepare food for your dog. But there are no massive downsides. If you know how and like to do this, be free to prepare all the meals for your pet.
