How To Stop A Dog From Marking Outside? You probably know that most dogs will mark their territory. You can see that happening every single time you take him for a walk. Most owners accept and some even appreciate this behavior. They believe their dog is the alpha. But, some don’t. How to stop a dog from marking outside? This is the question those owners have and now we will answer it.

Dog marking the territory: All you need to know

Before we move to the actual answer and methods you can use, here is a short explanation of why dogs do this. How to stop a dog from marking outside questions will be much easier to answer once you know the basics.

Usually male, intact dogs will mark territory. They will use pee for this purpose. Believe it or not, all male dogs have a small amount of pee stored in their bladder for this purpose. This means that they can pee at any given moment. Some will pee on every single lamppost while others on every corner of the street. It can be problematic, especially if you have 2 or 3 male dogs who do this all the time. Your walks will last for hours.

The goal of this is to tell other dogs or better said members of the same species that your dog owns that territory or he was there. This is also used to reveal details about social status, maturity, and also reproductive status.

Usually, male dogs will start doing this at age 6-12 months or once they reach sexual maturity.

Yes, female dogs will do this as well but rarely. Also, only intact female dogs will mark the territory. It is a much rarer behavior but it can happen. Once again, a dog will use pee to communicate with other dogs.

An interesting fact is that the location of where the pee is present is important. Smaller dogs may even lift their leg or try to lift themselves in order to reach a higher spot on the wall. This should tell other dogs that he is much bigger than he actually is. Dogs are clever animals.

Another thing you should know is that feces can be used for the same purpose. This happens less frequently than using pee but it can happen.

Stopping your pet from marking outside

Yes, this is something you can do and something that has been used for years. However, not all dog owners will use these methods or tips if you like. Some like the idea that their pet is marking the territory and communicating with other dogs. Below we will reveal and explain the best methods. Don’t forget that you can and should try all of the themes and see which one works best for your dog. Every dog is different so a different method will work.

1. Use the leave it command

This is one of the first methods and one of the most effective. The goal is to teach your pet to leave it command. You can use toys, treats or just play with your dog to teach him this. Issue the command as many times as you can and reward your pet when he obeys. Don’t reward him when he doesn’t.

Now, all you have to do is to issue the command when he wants to mark the territory. You can see him stopping immediately and proceeding with the walk. This is the best example of when the training is successful.

There is no need in adding that you can use this command for other purposes as well. It is very effective and it can be used for all kinds of purposes. You definitely should train your pet regardless of his desire to mark the territory.

2. Stop the process

Here we have a bit more advanced method that works well as well. There are a few things you need to know. Marking the territory is a process that consists of 3 stages. The first one is he will sniff around. Second, he will align his body to the object he wants to pee on. The third step is peeing.

In order to use this method, your timing must be flawless. Your pet will be on a leash and as soon as you see him sniffing around, you will stop the process. You will pull him and tell him ‘’don’t pee on that’’, ‘’leave it’’ or something similar. This should work.

Timing is important due to the fact if your pet already started marking the territory, you are too late. You won’t be able to stop this action and you will have to wait for the next time. Now, repeat the process as many times as needed.

An advantage of this method is the ability to quickly change his behavior. The success rate is very high. A downside is that he must be on a leash at all times which isn’t something dog owners like.

3. Pee on command

This method is the most time-consuming of them all. As you can see, all you have to do is to teach him to pee on command, or when you allow it. This will work only when you are outside and when you find a suitable spot. Keep in mind that a dog will still pee when he wants most of the time but he will also pee when you issue the command.

The training in question is not extremely complicated but there are a few points you need to know about. Learn the basics and see when your dog will normally pee. Use the leash and move him to the desired area. Give the command which can be ‘’go pee’’ or something similar. Once he is done you will give him the command ”go potty’’. After that say yes. This is something you should repeat and do for a week or two. After that time he should wait for you to say yes when the time is right so he can pee.

You should allow your pet to mark the territory occasionally

How to stop a dog from marking outside is basically a simple process. However, it isn’t a definite one. What this means is that you still should allow your pet to mark the territory every now and then. Make sure to allow him to do this when he really wants and when you see a spot that is ideal. For instance, peeing on the walls of other people’s homes is not ideal. Peeing in the park is.

You can also allow them to mark when you are working with your pet and you two are training. If you like you can reward his behavior using a toy, a treat, or just play with your pet.

Stop your dog from marking inside the house

It is more common than you may believe. Some dogs will mark the territory inside the house all the time. What should you do? The goal is to put an end to this as soon as you can. There are a few things you can do.

  • Visit a vet

The first thing is to go to a vet. There might be a medical condition that makes your pet pee inside the house. He is unable to withstand the urge and he must pee anywhere he can. There are countless medical issues that can affect this. After the check is done and if everything is fine, you will move to other points here.

  • Remove the urine odor

Dogs will pee in a spot where they can smell urine. If you don’t clean the urine smell properly, your pet will smell it and he will pee in that same location. Don’t forget that you will need a UV torch and also special chemicals to remove the scent. Ordinary solutions do not work well. Once you have removed the odor you can proceed to another step.

You can also keep your pet away from an area where he likes to pee a lot. This can be a separate room, a hallway, or somewhere else. Close the door or use any other method and prevent him from going there.

  • Take him outside to pee

Teach your pet that he must pee outside only. For this, you will have to take him outside for a walk on a regular basis. Dogs usually pee after sleeping, eating, or drinking water. In other words, these are all the times when you should take him out and allow him to pee.
