Yorkshire terrier is a small dog breed that is quite popular among dog owners. It has also been featured in the American Kennel club‘s list of most famous dog breeds. Yorkies are popular enough to secure their spot in the top 10 many years. A person who owns a Yorkshire terrier feels the joy of having a best friend on his side. And some of you might wonder how many puppies do Yorkies have?

If you plan to mate your dog, first get to know everything about it in detail. We have put together all the necessary information to increase your knowledge about the topic.

What is the Number of Puppies in the Yorkie’s First Litter?

A Yorkie can produce one to three puppies in her first litter. The number depends upon the dog’s size, health, weight, age, and time. A moderately healthy dog is likely to produce one pup in her first litter. The number can increase to three to five if the female dog maintains good health and appropriate weight.

If you own a female Yorkshire terrier, it’s tempting to breed her as soon as possible because you can’t wait for your Yorkie to have her little ones. But hold on!! You have to wait until the female reaches two years of age to have her first litter. Breeding before that can be dangerous for both the mother and the pups.

Can Yorkies Have Eight Puppies?

On average, Yorkshire Terriers produce three puppies, but it depends upon the dog’s health and age. So yes! Yorkie can have three to eight puppies. Females who are giving birth in their second or third heat are more likely to have less number of puppies.

The greater the experience and several heats, the greater are the chances that Yorkie will produce many puppies. The number also depends upon the number of sperms of a male dog. Older dogs produce more sperms than younger dogs.

What Things need to be Considered before Mating Yorkshire Terrier?

If you are ready to breed your Yorkie, keep the following things in mind before mating to avoid any complications later on.

Genetic Health is Important

Never breed a Yorkshire Terrier in a poor health state or suffer from any genetic condition. This is because genetic diseases will pass to the offspring at all costs, which need to be avoided. The most common genetic problems are hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

Physical Health is Important

When you decide to breed the Yorkie, make sure it is free of any physical defect because the offspring can inherit some physical defects like a poorly developed jaw.

Size of Male Yorkie

Many owners might have no idea that the size of a male dog is important. Always choose the male dog whose size is smaller than the female so that pups produced are not so big that it stresses the uterus.

Avoid Inbreeding

Remember that genetically related dogs’ inbreeding will produce individuals with genetic problems. The pups delivered in this case are highly likely to have recessive genes that can cause several mutations to appear. Thus affecting the overall health.

You have to be Responsible

The thought of having little puppies of your pooch sounds interesting and fun, but the reality is a bit different. Remember! They are not just animals born to your dog but lives that need care and attention. And don’t forget, all puppies born are not perfect. They might be ill or develop some issues later. Whatever the case will be, you have to take responsibility.

Early Pregnancy Signs of Yorkies

What are Early Pregnancy Signs of Yorkies?

Spotting pregnancy in Yorkies at early stages is pretty hard. You can’t tell they are pregnant unless you perform a blood test, x-ray, or ultrasound. Even the blood test doesn’t give accurate results about the pregnancy until the third week. But few early signs might help you to determine whether Yorkie is pregnant or not.

  • Yorkies are naturally active dogs. But if they appear frail and sluggish, it might be one of the signs.
  • A firm stomach and enormous nipples are also a sign of pregnancy.
  • You will spot the “nesting behavior, ” an attempt to prepare for offspring arrival. She will gather toys and create a peaceful environment due to a maternal instinct.

What is the duration of a Yorkie’s Pregnancy?

Yorkshire terriers generally have a 63 days long gestation period, starting from conception. This is an average duration, but since birth is a complicated phenomenon, the duration can vary greatly among different females. It is perfectly fine if the dog delivers the puppies within 58 to 68 days. But if the time exceeds 68 days, it is better to consult a vet to avoid any risky situation.

How Many Times Can Yorkie Mate?

Male Yorkies can mate as many times in one year as you allow them to. But female Yorkies are different because they have to carry and deliver the puppies. So they can mate several times until they become pregnant. Generally, Yorkies are fertile dogs; that is to say, they usually conceive after the first mating.

Keep in mind that mating and breeding are different from each other. Dogs can mate 2 to 3 times before the female Yorkie becomes pregnant. A responsible breeder shouldn’t let the female breed more than once or twice a year. Because what matters is not the money but the breed itself.

Bottom Line

How Many Puppies Do Yorkies Have? Yorkies are highly fertile dog breeds that can produce 3 to eight puppies. If you have decided to breed your dog, prepare yourself. As the dog will face all the risks, you have to be very responsible.
