Sometimes, the temperature goes above the roof. We all wear more breathable and light fabric to cover us but, have you ever thought about your companion? How hot is too hot for dogs? Let’s find out in this article.

Do We Realize How Hot It Is For Dogs In The Summer?

In summer, your companion cannot cover their fur on their own. So, that’s why dog owners need to know when it’s too hot to go outside with their dog and what are the signs of overheating and heat strokes?

Temperature For Dogs In House

The answer to this question is a little bit complicated because the temperature of a dog entirely depends upon several factors instead of only one.

All of these factors are mentioned below.

  • Weight
  • Height
  • Humidity Level
  • Breed

Animal welfare specialists agree that 80 degrees Fahrenheit is harmful to dogs.  However, this temperature can change depending upon several factors that I have already mentioned above. But still, there are various safety measures that you can take to prevent your dog from getting hot, which we will discuss in a moment.

Average Temperature for Dogs?

An average dog temperature varies from 101 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit, slightly higher than an average human temperature. You can use a digital thermometer to check it, and if it is above 104 degrees Fahrenheit, you need to immediately take your companion to a nearby vet.

Symptoms

Several symptoms can help you identify whether your dog’s temperature is above the roof without using a digital thermometer. Stumbling, collapse, and seizures can occur as your companion’s body temperature rises.

However, there are several other symptoms as well, which are mentioned below.

  • Panting
  • Drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Bright red gums & Tongue

These factors indicate that your dogs’ temperature increases, and your dogs need to go to a veterinary clinic.

What Temperature Should I Keep In My House For My Dog?

Although half of the day you are out of your house for work, you must ensure that the temperature of your house remains constant for your companion so that your companion won’t face any difficulty when you are not at home.

1. Breed

When there are over 400 dog breeds around the globe, each having its own unique characteristics, it’s hard to track which breed can cope with how much heat?

Many dog breeds such as Chihuahuas and Pharoah easily adapt to the warm environment because of their short coats. On the other hand, if we look at Huskies, Malamutes, Pugs, and Bulldog have thick coats, which is why they are at higher risk of heat strokes in summer.

2. Weight

Higher-weight dogs have higher fat stored in their bodies, which is essential for winters. But when it comes to summer, they face a lot of difficulty with heat.

3. Size

Smaller dogs tend to have a higher surface area, which means more skin releases heat from their bodies. If we see this from the body mass ratio, larger dogs face difficulty in heat due to lower surface area.

4. Coat-Type

Dogs such as Sebirin Husky face a lot of difficulty during summer because their fur type is naturally designed to keep them warm, and that’s why they are unable to get rid of heat during summer.

Larger fur dogs are more likely to heat quickly.

5). Age

Young puppies and older dogs face a lot of difficulty during summer as their body temperature fluctuates rapidly as compared to healthy dogs.

Basic Safety Measures To Prevent Your Dog From Getting Hot

There are various methods to prevent your dog from getting hot. Some of them are mentioned below.

1. Don’t entirely depend upon ceiling fans

As you probably know that pets are sweeter than humans. Dogs sweat from their feet, and unfortunately, ceiling fan waves are not so strong to reach their heat. You can use a table fan to prevent your dog from getting hot.

2. Humidity

It is essential to see the standard temperature, but humidity is one of the most crucial factors for dogs’ heat strokes. If you see that your dog’s temperature is getting higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit, consider visiting a nearby veterinary clinic.

3. Exercise during hot days

Although exercise is vital for your companion’s health, consider little exercise during peak temperature hours. Early morning or evening is the most recommended time for exercise for dogs in summer.

Heat Strokes In Dog

Heatstroke happens when a pet’s natural body functions cannot regulate the body’s temperature within a safe range. Heatstroke may result in gastrointestinal disturbance, malfunction of internal organs, internal bleeding, infection, or even death in extreme situations.

Pet owners need to use caution to prevent heatstroke and seek veterinarian assistance when their pet exhibits overheating symptoms.

***Always remember Pets are more sensitive to heat than humans***

Signs Of Heat Strokes In Dog

According to PSI, dogs can easily suffer from heat strokes during summer when not taken care of them. Heat strokes usually occur in dogs when they are left in space without air ventilation during summer.

Following are some signs of heat strokes:

  • Uncontrollable Panting
  • Foaming at the mouth
  • Agitation
  • Legarthy

How To Prevent Heat Strokes In Dogs?

According to the Texas Veterinary Medical Association, these three steps can easily prevent your dog from getting heat strokes.

  • Don’t leave your pet in the car when there is more than 45-degree celsius.
  • Don’t go for a walk with your pet when there is high humidity outside.
  • Don’t go outside at peak temperature hours without water and shade for your dog.

FAQs

How Can I Help My Dog Cool Down?

Giving your dog a fantastic place to lay down under a ceiling fan helps their body to reduce temperature. Doggie ice cream and some ice cubes in a bowl also help lower their body temperature.

Can I Leave My Dog In A Car During Summer?

Don’t leave your dog in a car for more than half an hour when the temperature is more than 45-degree Celsius.

Final Verdict

How hot is too hot for dogs? After discussing all the aspects, it’s time to wrap up the whole article. The temperature ranges from 72 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit is very significant for your house. If the temperature increases above 80 degrees Fahrenheit and your companion shows any of the symptoms that we have already mentioned above, you should consider visiting a nearby vet.
