Most dog owners know that spaying a female dog is beneficial. After all, you can’t get unwanted puppies which is important. Your dog will be calmer and have more consistent behavior in general. This is a routine procedure that is simple and harmless. A female spayed dog acting strange hence doesn’t make any sense. Well, this is not a simple procedure and there are a few things that can go wrong. Your dog will behave differently due to these things.

Female Spayed Dog Acting Strange Possible Reasons

A Spayed Female Dog Acts Like She Is Again In The Heat

Here we have one of the most bizarre and the strangest issues or complications. A female spayed dog acting strange like she is in the heat. As you can assume this shouldn’t happen. After all, her ovaries are removed so she can’t be in the heat. Well, she can if the procedure wasn’t done perfectly.

This issue is known as ovarian remnant syndrome. It means that the part of the ovary is left behind. After a few days or a few weeks after the procedure, it will become active. This means that your dog will be in the heat. Don’t worry, your dog won’t get pregnant but she can attract males and she will behave like before when she was in the heat before the procedure.

The solution is to perform the exploratory laparotomy. What this means is that a surgeon will use a small instrument to find the part of the ovary left inside and remove it. Once done, your pet won’t be in the heat anymore. As you can see, this looks strange and complicated but it is easy to understand why it happens and to solve it completely.

Malignant Tumors

This is rare and it is a bit tricky to explain. In general, all dogs can get tumors at some point. Keep in mind that even spayed dogs can have a mammary tumor. This happens only in 0.5% of cases but it is possible.

If you have a female dog who was spayed properly but still shows some issues and has behavioral problems, a tumor can be the reason why. These tumors usually affect the hormones and they can change how your pet will behave and react at certain moments. You have to take him to a vet as soon as possible and you need to start treatment if it is available.

My Dog Refuses to Eat Or Eats Just One Thing

This probably sounds bad and you believe that there is something massively wrong with the dog. It doesn’t have to be like that. If your dog refuses to eat or eats just one thing even 7 days after the procedure it is fine. She is in discomfort and even pain. This procedure is far from simple and it is the biggest change that will happen to your dog’s body ever. As such, she just needs time to recover completely.

Even if the wounds look completely fine and there are no big traces, it doesn’t have to mean that the recovery is all done. This happens when the exterior or the skin looks fine at the top but the deeper layers are still recovering. Your pet needs up to 2 weeks of time to recover completely. Make sure she doesn’t run, jump, or rough play during that time.

Pain Is Still Present

Thanks to medications this should be a painless procedure. Sadly, there are cases when this is not possible. In other words, your dog will be in pain. She will hide, she will drool and she will also shake occasionally or all the time. This means that the medications do not work and she is in pain.

Some level of pain is normal and there is no need to take any actions. But, if the pain persists for a few days and your dog acts weird even then, you need to take her to a vet and change the medications. It is also possible that there are some complications that cause pain and a vet needs to see it and start an additional treatment.

Diarrhea and Vomiting After 24 Hours

Your dog may vomit or have diarrhea or both actually a few hours after the procedure. This happens due to anesthesia and it is perfectly normal. You do know that humans have the same problem due to anesthesia. You don’t have to do anything and this will go away within hours.

The problem is if these two are present 24 hours after the procedure or even longer. It means that there is a problem. Some problems during the procedure can cause this or certain medications can be responsible. Either way, you will have to take her to a vet as soon as possible.

Infections

This is a procedure and as such, it comes with a wound. The wound can end up in infection in no time. You can sense bad smells coming from the wound, see pus, the site that reopens and so much more. As a result, your dog will hide, refuse to eat or drink water and react strangely all the time. She will also be lethargic most of the time and will refuse to play or even more.

If you notice any of these symptoms after the procedure, take her to a vet immediately. The infections can be a huge problem if they are not treated. If they are treated, the process is usually a few-day process that is 100% effective.

The Final Word

A female spayed dog acting strange is rare but a huge problem in most cases. It looks scary in the lack of a better word. After all, your dog had a massive surgery and now she is acting strange when she should be just fine. All you need to remember is that all of these are not severe problems that are fatal in 99% of cases. They are actually easy to treat and the treatments are more than just effective. So, don’t worry and focus on helping your dog.
