Wondering what dogs are like huskies? For some of you, huskies are the best dogs in the world. They are strong, fast, look like wolves and are spectacular. But there are dogs, like huskies that have some characteristics that are similar. Today, we are going to discuss those dogs. There are seven breeds that will impress you. Yes, you will want one after you complete reading this article.

Characteristics of Huskies and Similar Breeds

Huskies are renowned for a set of distinct characteristics that make them and similar breeds stand out. Understanding these traits is key when considering dogs like Huskies for adoption:

Striking Appearance: One of the most notable features of Huskies is their striking appearance. They typically have a dense double coat, erect ears, and captivating almond-shaped eyes that can be blue, brown, or even one of each color. Breeds similar to Huskies also often share these eye-catching physical traits.

High Energy and Stamina: Huskies were originally bred as sled dogs, requiring immense energy and stamina. This trait is common in similar breeds, making them ideal for active families or individuals who can provide ample exercise and outdoor activities.

Intelligence and Independence: Known for their intelligence, Huskies can be quite independent and sometimes stubborn. This smart but independent streak is often found in breeds similar to Huskies, requiring a patient and consistent training approach.

Most Adorable Cute Dogs That Will Steal Your Heart

December 9, 2024

Sociable and Friendly Nature: Despite their strong-willed nature, Huskies are typically very sociable and friendly. They usually get along well with people and other dogs. Similar breeds often share this amiable disposition, making them great companions.

Vocal Communication: Huskies are known for being vocal, using howls, whines, and barks to communicate. This trait is not only charming but also prevalent in Husky-like breeds, adding to their unique personality.

Adaptability to Cold Climates: Huskies and similar breeds are well-adapted to cold climates, thanks to their thick fur. This adaptation makes them a great choice for cooler regions, though they may require special care in warmer climates.

These characteristics define Huskies and have a significant influence on the breeds that share their lineage or traits.

7 Dogs Like Huskies

  • Samoyed

Samoyed dog like husky

Of all dogs like huskies, Samoyed has to be the one that has the most similar look. Samoyeds are still arctic dogs, and they can pull sleds without any issues. They look like huskies if you look at their ears, heads, and bodies in general. In general, the similarity is so massive that some people are unable to tell the difference.

Here is how you can distinguish these two breeds: Samoyeds are completely white, and they have a creamy coat. They don’t have a brown or black signature as huskies. In plain words, Samoyeds are completely white, and their fur looks a bit bigger and thicker.

  • Tamaskan Dog

Tamaskan Dog

Tamaskan Dog looks more like a wolf than any other dog. But the Siberian Husky looks like a wolf as well, and you can see detailed comparisons on the web. As such, we can compare these two dog breeds. Tamaskan Dog has a complicated origin. Several breeds are involved, and the real story is completely unknown. We can see that some of those breeds are Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, Malamute, and others.

Siberian Huskies and Tamaskan dogs both have thick coats, and they are big dogs. The latter is bigger than a Siberian Husky, just to keep in mind. Tamaskan dogs are great pets. They have a lot of energy, and they are alert dogs all the time. Don’t forget that you will have to help him get the physical activity he needs every single day. This is mandatory for all dogs, especially for extremely active pets like Tamaskan Dog.

  • Akita Inu

Akita Inu may look like huskies

Akita Inu may look like huskies. If you are a new person in the world of dogs, you can confuse these two. But we are referring to the physical appearance, or better said, the shape of the head and body only. The color is not the same, and the weight is not the same either. These dogs are 2 times heavier than huskies. The tail is a bit different; huskies have a bushy tail that will be curled when a dog is excited. Akita Inu has a curled tail all the time.

These are watchdogs, and you should use them for that. Huskies are great and strong pets. They love people, and they treat everyone with great respect. The behavior of these two breeds can be the main difference if you think straight. Akita Inu are more specific dogs than you may believe.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

The breed is not extremely popular, so you will have to find a breeder who can provide you with a healthy puppy that has full genetic potential. They can be expensive, but they are one-of-a kind dogs. If you want to be original, adopt Akita Inu (if you can provide physical activity and your time to him).

  • Malamutes

Malamutes and huskies look similar, and many people will confuse them. Both are used in arctic areas to pull sleds. There are some differences. Malamutes are bigger and heavier. The weight of these dogs is almost two times higher than that of a husky.

The colors are not the same, either. Bolder coloring is one of the characteristics huskies have. They wear a white mask with colored fur around the nose and above their eyes. Malamutes have a white face and colorful fur on the top of their heads. It is that simple.

  • Alaskan Klee Kai

Alaskan Klee Kai looks like Siberian Husky, only smaller. They are great pets, but they are a bit shy. But the resemblance to huskies is impressive, and many dog owners who don’t have room for a husky will get this breed. They do love to bark. In reality, these dogs will alert you when someone is coming, and they are loud. They are happy as well, so this is another reason why so many people love these dogs and want to keep them.

  • Utonagan

Utonagan is a hybrid breed

Utonagan is a hybrid breed. It has genes from three other breeds, so it is a bit special. Here we can see Siberian husky, German Shepherd, and also Alaskan malamute. If you mix all the tree dog breeds you will get Utonagan. It looks like a wild wolf. This was the primary goal of the breeders.

These dogs are very active and they like to run all day long. The physical appearance is unique and reminds us of huskies. Keep in mind that these dogs are bigger than huskies.

  • Keeshond

Keeshond dog breed

Keeshond is one of the dog breeds that we don’t recommend to new owners. In reality, if you are a newbie, you shouldn’t adopt a husky either. The reason is their stubbornness. Both breeds can be extremely stubborn, and you will have a hard time training them. This can be a huge issue for some dog owners. Both breeds deserve proper and successful training so they are better dogs for experienced dog owners. Without training, Keeshond can be impossible to control.

This particular dog breed has much thicker fur and is dark in color. They are watchdogs, and you should get one for this purpose only. We must add that Keeshond dogs are extremely loyal and affectionate, and you can enjoy having one in the family. They are great pets.

Considerations Before Adopting a Husky-Like Dog

Adopting a dog with Husky-like traits can be a rewarding experience, but it’s important to consider several factors to ensure you’re prepared for the commitment. Here are key considerations before bringing a Husky-like breed into your home:

Exercise Needs: Dogs similar to Huskies typically have high energy levels and require significant daily exercise. Prospective owners should be prepared to provide ample opportunities for physical activity, including long walks, runs, or playtime in a secure area.

Grooming and Shedding: Husky-like breeds often have thick, double coats that require regular grooming. They tend to shed heavily, especially during seasonal changes, so regular brushing and grooming are essential to manage shedding and maintain coat health.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

Training and Socialization: Given their intelligence and independent nature, Husky-like dogs need consistent training and early socialization. Training should focus on obedience, and socialization should expose them to different people, pets, and environments to ensure well-rounded behavior.

Space Considerations: These breeds usually do best in homes where they have plenty of space to move around. A house with a securely fenced yard is ideal, but apartment living can be suitable if their exercise needs are met.

Climate Adaptability: Huskies and similar breeds are well-suited to colder climates due to their thick fur. If you live in a warmer area, consider the breed’s comfort and health in hot weather, providing adequate shade, water, and air conditioning.

By carefully considering these aspects, potential owners can make a more informed decision about adopting a Husky-like breed, ensuring a happy and harmonious relationship with their new pet.

The Final Word

There are a few dogs like huskies, and now you know all about them. As you can see, some are very difficult to distinguish from huskies. Others look partially similar, and the third looks similar but with a different color. But each breed from here has interesting differences and behaviors. You can use these when you are planning to adopt a new dog. You must match these with your lifestyle, your needs, and your capabilities.
