Yes, dogs can get congested as well and this is more common than you may believe. A sad thing here is that they can’t do anything about it, so you will need to help your pet. Dog sounds congested when breathing is a common thing in fact. Below we are going to reveal all the main facts you need to know about this matter and help you as much as we can. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Look For Foreign Objects First

Dog sounds congested when breathing is a common thing, as we have mentioned at the beginning. But, one of the reasons can be the fact there is a foreign object inside the nose. The nasal cavity of dogs is extremely sensitive and it can easily start bleeding and become irritated. You will have to take your pet to a vet and he can examine your pet. If something is detected, he will remove it. This is the first thing you should look for. Keep in mind that collapse of the nostril and nasal discharge are common in this case as well and your vet will have to know about this as well.

Brachycephalic Dog Breeds

You probably know that certain dog breeds called brachycephalic have a lot of breathing issues. The best examples are pugs and bulldogs. These dogs have wide heads and short noses. They can suffer from all kinds of deformities of the nasal cavity and there are a lot of issues such as snoring, heavy breathing and so much more. The issue will get worse with age or when your pet exercises hard. These dogs should not exercise when the temperature is high due to the aforementioned issues.

How Can You Tell If A Dog Is Congested?

Dogs can’t speak so they will have to use all kinds of signs to tell you that something is wrong. Yes, all dogs will do this in their own way and all of them will try to tell you that you should help them.

The first thing you will have to look for is body language. Dogs have been using body language to communicate with humans and other dogs forever. You will see pacing, panting, sniffing, cowering, shaking and he will tilt his head. Your pet will likely have more than one of these signs or even all.

There are other signs you will have to look for. For instance, the dog may have a fever, mucus running, nasal discharge, loss of appetite, hacking cough, lip or gum discoloration. Of course, sneezing is common in this case scenario as well and it is one of the first symptoms some dog owners notice.

Help Your Dog Decongest His Nose

If your dog has a congested nose you will want to help him as much as you can. There are a lot of things here you need to know about. First of all, give your pet a warm soup. Make sure that the soup is not too hot or it can burn him. All dogs breathe through the nose except when panting. When his nose is blocked he will breathe using the mouth and this doesn’t look natural.

Another thing you will have to do is to wipe and clean his secret from the nose on a regular basis. This is something that is far from pleasant but mandatory. You can also use a humidifier. Place it next to a dog as he sleeps and he should be better in the morning.

One secret that is very effective and simple to use is to let your pet in the bathroom when you are taking a shower. The steam will help your dog decongest the nasal passages. It works well and better than you may believe. You can do this multiple times per day.

But, if the mucus is too thick and you have problems removing it or nothing from the above works, take your dog to a vet.

Treatment May Be Needed

Luckily in most cases, the treatment is safe and easy to use and your dog will be better within days. In many situations, your pet will have to take medications. There are two main things here. The first one is a pill. You will have to mix it with food and give it like this. Yes, some effort will be needed and your pet will eventually start taking the pills in the food. Some dogs may take a pill from your palm but this is extremely rare.

If your pet must take a liquid medication you will have to train him to do this. Take a syringe and fill it with water. Give it to your dog. Now, repeat the process as many times as you can. Once you think you are ready, replace the water with liquid medicine and repeat the process. Reward him afterward. This is actually something all dog owners should train their dogs for. You never know when he will have to take medicine and when this training will be needed. You obviously cannot train him when he is sick.

Your pet can have all kinds of issues causing him to sneeze and act sick. Some of the causes are allergies. Keep in mind that you must not try to give him medication on your own. You need a vet so he can prescribe the proper medication that will work well but at the same time be safe for your dog.

Prevention Strategies

Dealing with a dog that sounds congested when breathing can be distressing for both the pet and the owner. Prevention is always better than cure, and there are several strategies that dog owners can adopt to minimize the risk of congestion in dogs.

Regular Vet Visits

Schedule routine check-ups with the veterinarian to ensure your dog is in optimal health. Early detection of issues can prevent many health problems, including respiratory congestion.

Avoid Smoke and Chemicals

Protect your dog from secondhand smoke, strong fumes, and chemicals. Ensure good ventilation in areas where chemicals are used and consider air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

Balanced Diet

A balanced diet boosts the dog’s immune system. Consult the vet for dietary recommendations to enhance your dog’s immunity, making them less susceptible to infections leading to congestion.

Vaccinations

Keep your dog’s vaccinations up-to-date to prevent infections that could potentially lead to respiratory issues. Regular vaccinations safeguard dogs from various diseases and infections.

Exercise

Regular physical activity enhances the overall health and immune system of dogs. It ensures they are fit, and their bodies can effectively combat infections.

Know the Allergens

If your dog is allergic to specific substances, knowing and avoiding those allergens is crucial. Pay attention to any allergic reactions and discuss them with your vet to develop an avoidance strategy.

Incorporating these prevention strategies can significantly reduce the risk of your dog developing congestion and other related health issues. Being proactive in your pet’s health and well-being is the cornerstone of ensuring they live a happy, healthy life. If the dog sounds congested when breathing, it’s always best to consult a vet for professional advice and appropriate care.

The Final Word

Dog sounds congested when breathing is not a rare thing these days. Luckily there are a lot of things you can do to help him. All of the facts we have mentioned above are simple, easy to use and they are more than just beneficial. Also, all of these are mandatory things dog owners have to know and something you will need to memorize today. The main thing you will want to do is to help your pet as much as you can when he needs that help.
