Dogs eat grass all the time. You can see this every single time you walk him at a park. The problem begins when he is acting weird and eats grass. My dog is acting weird and eating grass is rare but some dogs will experience this. Our mission is to explain why this happens and what you should do about it. Yes, you should be worried, just to add.

Upset Stomach

In most cases, a dog will eat grass due to this reason. My dog is acting weird and eating grass is common when he has an upset stomach. He will usually vomit afterward. It is unclear whether he will do this because of the grass intake or the upset stomach. Dogs believe that eating grass can help them with an upset stomach.

Believe it or not, this usually works. If he stops vomiting, it means that the issue doesn’t exist anymore. But, if he vomits after eating grass, an upset stomach is still present. Take him to a vet.

He is Upset, Stressed, or Bored

If your pet is any of these things he may start eating grass. He will do this in order to attract your attention, to kill time, or to de-stress. You can see him behaving strangely. These dogs can typically avoid eating grass when you are present. They like to do this when they are alone or at least think when you don’t see him.

He Needs More Fiber

Yes, this is another reason and deserves an explanation. A dog who needs more fiber in the diet will eat grass. This is an excellent way to get that fiber. Some dogs act strangely during this process. Others don’t show any signs at all. It is possible that a dog will refuse to eat, eat all kinds of things, or even refuse to play and be sad. You still need to help him. Add fiber to the diet and he should be fine.

Stomach Problems

There are all kinds of stomach problems that can cause this problem. He will eat grass because he has stomach pain, he is vomiting, or has diarrhea. A dog with these issues will act weird and he will probably avoid walking, playing, and eating. Keep in mind that a dog can vomit because of stomach problems or because of the grass intake. Your very will help him and he can determine the cause. This doesn’t have to be a severe problem but can be hard to treat and solve.

Your Mission

Dog Is Acting Weird And Eating Grass

You will have to do something about this. As you were able to see, none of these issues will go away without any help. The first thing you must do is take your pet to a vet. He will examine the dog and he will determine the cause. Most if not all treatments here are effective and they are not very complicated. Your pet has great odds to heal himself within days. As such, he will probably stop eating grass.

Another thing you will want to do is to check for stress, fear, or boredom. If your pet has any of these issues he may eat grass as well. Try to play with him and spend more time. If the problem remains, it is probably due to another issue. This means that vet help is mandatory.

If you notice that a dog wants to hide, avoids other people, or pets, and looks scared, this may be another explanation. It simply means that your pet is scared. The cause can be another dog, a person, or anything else. There is no need in telling you that you also should help him overcome the fear that is present here.

We must add that eating grass is not a huge problem. Dogs have been doing this for centuries and it is perfectly normal. It can be beneficial as well. Many animals will eat grass when they have some problem with their digestive tract.

Should you try and change this? No. Really, there is no fear present here. If you live in an area where there are a lot of toxic plants, you will want to pay more attention. In other cases, there is no need to worry. This is normal and a problem only if your pet has other signs or symptoms as well.

Dogs Can Eat Grass Due To Other Reasons As Well

We have here all the common reasons why a dog will eat grass and behave differently. But, there are some cases when a dog will eat grass and behave weirdly but without a connection between these two. He may eat grass because he likes the taste.

However, he has some other issue that makes him behave weirdly. Yes, dogs love to eat grass. Some love it more than others but most of them will eat grass occasionally. This is not a bad thing and you don’t have to do anything about it.

Dogs can eat grass because this is in their blood. Their ancestors did this all the time. Most dogs do this because it had a lot of impact in the past and they are aware of it. Once again, we can see that some dogs will eat grass and behave strongly because of another problem. They may believe that eating grass will help them and solve the problem. In many situations, this happens when a dog is in discomfort or suffers from pain. Yes, more of these occur in the abdominal area.

Conclusion

My dog is acting weird and eating grass all the time. Is there some problem present? The answer is yes and no. With many dogs there won’t be any problem present.

But, in many dogs, it will be present. This simply means that a dog who has an upset stomach, issues with the stomach, or psychological problems will eat grass in order to try and solve his problem. You need to understand why he is doing this and to help him.
