There are a few reasons that will explain the topic. In essence, we can see 6 of them that are a great match. A dog with a tail between legs acting weird is not a rare issue. It affects many dogs at some point. In order to help him, you will need to know why he does this and what caused this behavior. Dogs don’t keep their tail between their rear legs without a reason!

Reasons A Dog Has Tail Between Legs Acting Weird

Fractured Tail

Yes, your dog can break or injure his tail significantly. If this happens, he will be in massive pain. He will keep his tail between his rear legs. A dog with a tail between legs acting weird due to this reason is rare but it can happen. It is a severe condition. You can see that he will not wiggle his tail anymore and he will be in pain. You can also see bleeding below the skin and losing the hair on the tail.

Professional help is needed. If you touch his tail and your pet starts running away and shows signs of pain or aggression, take him to the vet immediately. He will heal eventually but this can take a while. In rare cases, amputation of segments of the tail or complete tail may be the only solution!

Limber Tail Syndrome

This is one of the very common explanations. It usually affects dogs who were extremely active or injured. For instance, if your pet has been hunting with you or working for hours or even days, the syndrome may appear. You may have heard about this syndrome as acute caudal myopathy. It is the same thing. This can happen if your pet experiences very cold weather.

If this happens, the vertebra, ligaments at the base of the tail, or the muscles surrounding it will cause this behavior. Your pet can’t hold his tail normally due to an injury and inflammation in this area. He knows that something is wrong and he will act weird. Treatments include rest or anti-inflammatory medications.

Due To Anal Gland Issues

Anal glands are located around the anus of a dog. There are two of them. If your pet has issues with these, you can notice a discharge from the anus, pain, and a fishy smell. The only solution is to have the glands expressed. Your bet can do this or you can do it. It is an easy task and your pet will start behaving normally within minutes.

This can happen due to numerous reasons. Some breeds are more prone to this issue than others. We can see that toy poodles, beagles, cocker spaniels are at a higher risk. Some dogs may need procedures on a regular basis. If your pet has this, he will be in pain. He won’t sit normally and he will lick his anus regularly.

Happy Tail Syndrome

This is not as dangerous or weird an issue as you may believe. It is common and usually very easy to explain. It happens when a dog wiggles his tail and hits something.

He can injure the tail. Eventually, he will stop wiggling his tail and he will keep it between his legs. But, he will still want to wiggle his tail. So he will do it occasionally and he can injure it again which creates a circle of actions and effects. He can expose or injure his nerve in the tail which will cause pain, hence he will behave weirdly.

This is not a dangerous issue. It usually happens to retrievers, Labradors, Great Danes, and a few more breeds. You will have to allow him to recover. The only things you can actually do are to keep the wound clean and even cover it with something.

Fleas

Yes, fleas can cause this problem as well. They will bite your pet so he will be in massive discomfort. He will not be in pain, but itchy skin will be present. You can see skin sores, hair loss, flea dirt, and redness on the skin if your pet has this problem. You will have to use an ampule against fleas. These are very effective and they can help your pet within 24 hours. Tablets or collars can be effective as well.

Keep in mind that you will have to take care of your home as well. Fleas will be present all around the home and they can hide in the carpet for years! Vacuum your home and use all remedies you can in order to protect your home and your dog from these parasites.

Pyoderma

When skin is damaged, bacteria can get inside and infect it. Parasites and fungi can do the same thing. This type of infection is Pyoderma. If this happens near the tail or on the tail itself, a dog will keep it between his legs. He will be in pain so you can see why he will act so weird all the time. A vet will examine the dog. If he finds papules (red damages on the skin filled with pus) he will diagnose this issue.

The area will be in pain. It will be itchy as well and hair loss is common. This can happen to any body part so it doesn’t have to affect the tail area directly. Pitbulls, terriers, and bulldogs are more prone to this issue. Antibiotics are an effective remedy. This treatment can last up to 14 days. In rare cases, your pet may need more specific antibiotics. The problem may look extremely bad but it is not the case. It is actually very common and easy to treat.

The Final Word

A dog that has a tail between legs acting weird is a common thing these days. This can happen due to all these reasons here. However, it is probable that your pet suffers from just one. Examine your pet and determine the reason. If you can take him to a vet and start treatment. Dogs don’t hold their tail between their legs without a reason. Usually pain, fear, or discomfort are caused!
