Dogs can develop diarrhea due to many reasons. Today we are going to try and explain the most common ones. If your pet is acting normal, there might be no reason for concern. My dog has bloody diarrhea but acting normal can happen at any given moment. If this happens to your pet, you will need to know what to do. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Why Does My Dog Has Bloody Diarrhea But Acting Normal

Changing the diet

One of the most common reasons is a new diet. If you change the die to your pet at once, his body will need time to adapt. During that time, he may develop inflammation of the intestines and the stomach. If that happens, bloody diarrhea is next. A dog has bloody diarrhea but is acting normal due to the inflammation. This is not a huge issue for him hence he will still behave as before.

To avoid this problem, always switch to a new diet gradually. Take as much time as your pet needs. This will prevent bloody diarrhea and your pet will adapt to a new diet in no time.

Stress

Stress can cause bloody diarrhea. It may sound weird or impossible but this does happen. The condition here is Colitis. It affects the colon. Once it starts the colon won’t be able to absorb water properly. It won’t be able to hold feces normally. This means that a dog will try to poop all the time but only a small amount of poop will come out. Besides blood that can be present in the stool, your pet can have mucus in it as well.

There is no need to tell you that a dog deserves treatment. Your vet will help him and he will feel better in no time. A dog may need days or a few weeks to recover completely. Changes in the diet are useful here.

Home Remedies

This is something you can try and treat at home. It is not always the ideal approach but you can start and if your pet feels better, well done. Usually, a proper diet will solve the problem. You will have to prepare a delicious and amazing meal for your pet. Cooked chicken without any skin and bones is the ideal approach. You can also use ground beef that some dogs prefer.

Feed your pet multiple times per day but in smaller amounts. He should recover within days and blood in the stool will be a thing of the past. Keep your eyes on the dog and his problem. This remedy is something a vet will recommend as well, but not always the only thing you should do.

Kidney Disease

Yes, your pet may suffer from kidney disease. Liver disease is another cause. As you should know already, your pet will need help from a vet. A complicated exam is mandatory. A vet will determine this disease and he will start treatment. If you start soon, the odds are much better.

Eating Garbage

Dogs will eat almost everything. They just love to eat and they can eat all day long. Sadly, they don’t know that some things are bad to eat. Garbage, textile, or spoiled foods are the best examples here. If your pet ate these, he may have bloody diarrhea. This should pass within a few days.

If there are still issues after a few days, another issue or complications may be present. Obstruction is a common thing here. Your dog may need surgery to remove the obstruction.

Parasites

If your pet has parasites in the intestine he may end up with bloody diarrhea. This can be difficult to explain and define. Some dogs will show severe signs of pain. Others won’t show a thing. Some of the parasites that can cause this are whipworms, Giardia, roundworms, and many others. This is not something you can treat at home. Your pet needs medications to remove the worms.

Sadly, it can be difficult to diagnose these unless you are an expert. In some cases, it is possible to see the worms or parasites in the stool. It is not something dog owners like to do but it is mandatory if you want to protect your pet and prevent further complications.

Medications

Some medications can cause bloody diarrhea in dogs. The best example here is antibiotics. If that happens, it means that the digestive tract is affected. The flora of the stomach is targeted and it has some damage.

A dog will experience bloody diarrhea but he won’t have massive pain or something that will make him act strange. Once you stop with medications, the flora should recover and there won’t be any traces of diarrhea or blood in the stool. Talk to your vet. He may prescribe you another medication or he may end the treatment.

When should you take a dog to a vet?

If your pet has diarrhea for a couple of days and there is no improvement, he must see a vet. A vet will prescribe him medication. Metronidazole (known as Flagyl) or amoxicillin are the two most common medications a vet will prescribe. These will help your pet within days and he will start feeling much better.

However, if your pet starts vomiting, or he is lethargic, additional tests are something your vet will have to do. This means that there is a more severe problem and that these drugs are not strong enough to cure it. Luckily most of the causes here are treatable.

The final word

A dog has bloody diarrhea but acting normal all the time or occasionally may happen to your pet. If that happens, you will need to monitor his behavior and symptoms. Take him to a vet if there is no improvement of any kind. Keep in consideration that we have revealed only the problems that can cause bloody diarrhea but a dog will still act normal. There are many other conditions in which a dog will still have bloody diarrhea but he will act strange.
