You may have heard of parvo. How dogs get parvo? Can dogs get parvo twice? Well, we will have to explain the topic in detail and help you understand it as soon as possible. This is a mandatory topic for all puppy owners and also dog owners who want to keep their pets safe and healthy. At this moment, all we can add is that this health issue is severe and you need to know all about it before it is too late!

Can Dogs Get Parvo Twice?

This is not common. As a matter of fact, once a dog is cured, he will not be susceptible to the virus again. His immune system will have the antibodies that will kill the virus. This type of immunity will last for several years. The bottom line here is simple. Your dog won’t get the virus two times or multiple times.

There are a few more things we need to mention here. First, you need to vaccinate your dog in order to protect him. If he ends up with the virus, hospital treatment is mandatory. If not, in 90% of cases this is a deadly virus! Your dog will still shed virus in the feces after he is feeling fine. This will last for 6 weeks.

It is possible that a dog gets the virus twice. But, the time frame between the two infections will be years long. Also, the second time a dog gets the virus he will probably be old and have a very weak or even damaged immune system. Adult dogs with a healthy immune system will never get the virus. When a dog gets parvo twice, it is usually because the viruses are of different strains.

Parvo: Main Things To Know

Parvo or Canine parvovirus (it is also called CPV) is a contagious disease that affects the intestines of a puppy. Puppies that are a few months old are at the highest risk. It can affect adolescent dogs as well. In addition, older dogs who have weak and damaged immune systems can end up with parvo as well. How dogs get parvo? Can dogs get parvo twice? These questions do deserve your attention by the way.

Parvo is a deadly disease. It is fatal in 90% of cases which makes it a severe problem. You can prevent your dog from getting this disease if you vaccinate him!

Some breeds are more prone than others. For instance, German shepherds, rottweilers, Labrador retrievers, Doberman pinschers, and some others have a higher risk of catching this disease.

How Do Dogs Get Parvo

Dogs will get the virus once they come in contact with it. A huge problem here is that the virus can survive almost anywhere and it is rather common. For instance, a dog with the virus will transmit it to the object.

A puppy will come in contact with that object and end up infected! The virus is extremely resilient. It can survive low temperatures, extreme heat, and most disinfectants. When a puppy or a dog touches the object, the virus will end up in the bloodstream eventually. We must add that the virus is present in the feces of a sick dog.

Parvo Virus Symptoms

You need to know about the symptoms a dog will show once he has the virus in the bloodstream. It is mandatory to remember that the virus advances fast so the symptoms will change fast. The first symptoms are:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite

After just 24-48 hours your pet will start showing other symptoms. These include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shock
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Death

As you can see, these are all severe symptoms that will require you to take the dog to a vet as soon as possible. One issue here is that many less-severe health issues will have the same (first ones here) symptoms. We believe that it is better to take your dog to a vet as soon as you notice fever and lethargy. These are usually severe when present together.

Parvo Treatment

The treatment for this disease is between 85% and 90% effective. Your pet has great odds of surviving the virus. But you will have to take him to a vet. He will test for the virus. It is possible that the test is negative if your pet didn’t start shedding. A vet will start with IV fluids. The dog will not eat or drink for some time. This is mandatory in order to allow for the digestive system to recover.

IV fluids are the most important part of the treatment. Your pet will lose so much water due to vomiting and diarrhea. He needs the fluid to survive. Antibiotics are a part of the treatment as well. They will prevent the bacteria from the gut reach the blood and causing sepsis. Your vet will probably use other medications as well. Those will help your dog with vomiting and diarrhea.

All you must remember is that this treatment is extremely simple and effective. Your pet has stunning odds and he will be perfectly fine. The only issue here is that the treatment can be expensive.

The best thing to do is to vaccinate your puppy. They are at the highest risk here. Keep in mind that a puppy will need 3 shots. The first one is at age 6 weeks, the second at 8 weeks, and the last at 12 weeks of age. Only after a puppy gets all three shots does he is immune to the virus. Before that happens, you need to protect the puppy.

The Final Word

How dogs get parvo? Can dogs get parvo twice? All the answers are right here and you can learn all the facts within 5 minutes. Parvo is a deadly virus that is very easy to cure if you start the treatment. The treatment is simple. But, the most important thing to know is that your puppy needs vaccines against this virus.
