The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

As a dog owner, you need to know one main thing. Some foods that we can eat, dogs must not consume. They are toxic to pets and can kill them or cause all sorts of problems. Can dogs eat kielbasa? This will be the topic for today. As always, we will start with the basics and then move our way up and reveal all the additional facts and things you need to know about this food as an addition to your dog’s diet.

Can Dogs Eat Kielbasa?

Dogs should not eat Kielbasa. It contains onion and garlic powder and can cause some health issues for your dog. First, it is high in sodium and fat. These are some of the worst ingredients your dog can consume. Fat can make your dog obese and increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and a lot more.

If we add that some dog breeds already have a higher risk of developing these diseases, we can deduce that any food that can contribute is bad. Fat can also cause pancreatitis and stomach distress. Sodium can dehydrate your dog and cause all sorts of other issues. In higher amounts, it can even cause sodium poisoning.

Kielbasa: What Is It?

Most of you want to know the answer as soon as possible. Can dogs eat kielbasa or not? But first, you will have to know what this is. Kielbasa is a meat sausage from Poland. It is one of the main elements of Polish cuisine, and it is delicious.

Kielbasa Is Dangerous To Dogs

Well, there you have it. This type of sausage may look delicious, and it certainly is but it is dangerous. Kielbasa can contain onion or garlic powder (usually it will). These two are actually toxic to all dogs and they can kill an animal. You must avoid them at all costs, and your dog must not consume any food that contains these two or consume them in their direct form.

There are no real benefits of feeding your dog kielbasa. Yes, it is high in protein, but this is not a huge benefit considering you can get the same nutrients from many other meals without any side effects. Kielbasa doesn’t contain minerals, vitamins, or anything similar that the dog benefits from.

Now that you know that Kielbasa offers a lot of problems and risks for your dog but no real perks, you can do the obvious. Do not feed your pet kielbasa. There are a lot of better, safer, and even better foods that a dog will prefer.

Are There Any Benefits?

No, there are no benefits. Surprisingly, we can see a lot of foods out there that are dangerous for dogs but still have a benefit or two for their health. Kielbasa doesn’t have this. Yes, there is protein present, but nothing special. There are no other nutrients a dog will need so there is no need to say anything more.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

Keep in mind that there are a lot of kielbasa recipes out there. This means that there are a lot of different sausage variations. What you need to know is that all of them do not come with any benefits, but they all have the problems we have here.

What To Do If A Dog Eats Kielbasa?

This is a bit tricky to explain. In general, a small amount of kielbasa will not kill a dog. Nothing will happen. But if he consumes it in large amounts or has been eating it for a long period of time, there is a serious danger.

A dog can show signs of anemia, lethargy, and weakness. Nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting are possible as well. All of these will come as the result of onion or garlic poisoning. It is not something you can treat at home so you must take him to a vet. If you notice these symptoms and kielbasa missing in the kitchen, you will have to take him to a vet.

The next issue here is sodium poisoning. This is another bad thing that can happen. Here, we have similar symptoms. Basically, dogs will show signs of nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, increased heart rate, and high blood pressure. In many situations, your dog will be fine after a visit to a vet.

But, in rare cases, he can end up with seizures or even die due to sodium poisoning. You can help him by giving him plenty of water. This will help him remove excess sodium from the body as soon as possible.

Due to the high fat count, kielbasa comes with one more issue. It can cause acute pancreatitis. This happens because the pancreas must produce enzymes that help digestion. Fat is difficult to digest; hence, the pancreas will have to produce a lot of those enzymes. These can damage or kill cells and cause internal inflammation. Signs here include fever, stomach pain, vomiting, lethargy, and a hunched back.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

Most dogs will recover by themselves, and there is no need for professional help. But some may end up with complications and even die due to pancreatitis. If the situation is severe, your pet will need painkillers, anti-inflammatory medications, IV fluids, and professional help in general.
