Ice cream is the best treat for most of us. We can enjoy it every single day and we can consume it in massive amounts. Ice cream is extremely versatile and comes in all kinds of variations. But, what about dogs and ice cream? Can dogs eat ice cream? Some of you will say yes. Others have been feeding their dogs with ice cream for years hence it must be safe. This topic actually deserves a detailed explanation.
Dogs and Ice Cream: Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?
Theoretically, dogs can eat ice cream. It is not toxic, in most cases. On the other hand, there are some issues and side effects that you need to know. You can give a small piece of ice cream to your pet every now and then. It is not extremely dangerous and there won’t be immediate side effects. But, this is not something you should do due to the risk we are going to explain below. There is no health benefit of any kind when a dog eats ice cream which is another problem.
Most dogs will feel perfectly fine when you feed them a small amount of ice cream. If you really have to do this, use plain ice cream without any flavors or addictions. Plain vanilla is actually the safest choice. Do not give your pet massive or even large amounts of ice cream and do not do this on a daily basis.
4 Possible Issues
If a dog eats ice cream, you may notice some issues. These are problems and they are not appealing. You don’t want your dog to suffer or have any complications. You don’t want to take him to a vet. Dog owners also need to know about the issues first so they can notice if or when something is not fine. Let’s explain all of them.
1. Obesity
Obesity is the first and the most common problem here. Dogs can get obese and today it is a more common thing than you may believe. More dogs are severely obese than ever. Ice cream is loaded with sugar. After all, ice cream is sweet. This means that it contains all kinds of sugar, sweeteners, etc. These can help your pet gain a lot of weight in no time. It also means that it can be a huge problem for some dogs.
Always make sure that ice cream or any other product doesn’t contain xylitol. This is an artificial sweetener and it is extremely toxic to dogs. Sadly, it is present in ice cream although this is rare.
2. Some Dogs Are Lactose Intolerant
All puppies produce specific enzymes when they are small. As they grow they will decrease the production and they will produce almost none of the enzymes. This means that dogs generally have a hard time digesting milk and related products.
Some dogs are lactose intolerant. Ice cream is loaded with milk hence there is a lot to digest here. Dogs who are lactose intolerant will have issues with their stomachs among other things. Gas, pain in the stomach, diarrhea and so much more are all the possible risks.
3. Some Flavors Are Toxic
This is a huge and probably the most severe problem here. Some ice creams come in flavors that are just toxic to dogs. The best example would be chocolate. As you all know (we hope you all know), chocolate is toxic to dogs and it can kill your pet. If you give him ice cream with chocolate, you know what this means.
Add the fact that there are all kinds of variations out there and that some flavors are extremely toxic to dogs and you can see the issue here. Unless you are an expert with these things and you know all there is about the ice cream and diet, avoid ice cream.
4. Allergies
Dogs do have food allergies. These come in unlimited variations and we cannot generalize a small part of them. When certain ingredients come in contact with the body of a dog, he can develop an allergy. Some of these are not very dangerous and they will cause vomiting and diarrhea. Others are very problematic. They can cause more severe health issues and if they are not treated they can be fatal to your pet.
Much Better Alternatives
Dogs do not need calcium, from milk and therefore ice cream to develop and maintain their bones. They can get it from other food sources. This simply means that giving milk and ice cream is not something you should do. It is a much better option to give your pet healthy alternatives.
The best alternative of them all is to use a ‘’nice’’ cream. This means you will have to blend 2 bananas and freeze them in your fridge. Give them to your dog. It is an extremely simple ice cream option to make and one that is much healthier. Your dog still gets all kinds of minerals, vitamins, and more but there are no risks. This ice cream option will not make your pet obese or poison him. A good thing is that most dogs do love this ice cream and many of them can eat it every single day. You can do it which makes things much easier.
There are also ice creams that are made for dogs. These can be a bit difficult to find and there are not many alternatives on the market but they are here. Yes, these are 100% safe and there are no issues of any kind.
The Final Word
Can dogs eat ice cream? The answer is no. Dogs must not eat ice cream. It is loaded with sugar which can make a pet obese and they may contain toxic ingredients. Some ice cream options are loaded with multiple ingredients that are toxic. There are no benefits either which makes this decision easy.
