Can Dogs Eat Flour? Do you want to make your pet’s treats at home but have no idea whether dogs can eat flour? Are you wondering which type of floor is best for your dog’s health? Flour is generally good for dogs’ health, and it is included in different dog products like in many baked treats. But sometimes, it arouses allergic reactions. Why? Because there are different types of flour and your dog can be allergic to any of them.

The key here is to understand that all flours are not the same. There are different types of flours, each one having its nutritional value. The whole grain flours are the ones with all the natural nutrients, thus a very healthy option. Your dog can eat treats made of whole-grain flour. While white flour is deprived of most natural nutrients thus not very healthy.

Since there are so many flours available out there, you must be wondering which flour is the best for your dog’s health as a dog owner. So we will be discussing different types of flours and their nutritional value. So keep reading until the end to know which one is best for using in dog’s treats.

Is Flour Suitable for Dogs?

Flour is suitable for dogs, and they can have it without experiencing any serious issues. But you have to give attention to the flour kind your dog has. Flour is not a necessary dietary requirement which means that excluding flour from the dog’s diet won’t make a clearer difference. But since you treat your dog often and most of them have flour in them, it is better to choose the one which serves high nutritional value.

And if you are a bit tight on budget or a hygiene enthusiast, you can make dog treats at home using flour. This is the most secure option, particularly for the owners whose dogs suffer from some allergy. Making treats at home gives you full control of choosing the wholesome ingredients.

What Kind of Flours Are Suitable For Dogs?

Each flour has its consistency, taste, and nutritional profile. Different types of flours are listed below, which will help you understand which one is most suitable for your dog. You can incorporate that flour type into your pet’s diet.

Whole Grain Flour

Whole grain is the best kind of flour available for use in a dog’s diet. It is rich in healthy and natural nutrients, but it might not suit all dog breeds. This is because they are difficult to digest and can upset the stomach. Switch to non-grain flour if your dog has a weak digestive system.

Whole Wheat Flour

Whole wheat flour is the best type of flour for use in making dog treats at home. It is also quite popular among dog owners. This flour is made from crushing whole wheat kernels, which means the entire wheat grain is used to make the flour. This is why this flour retains the most nutritional value.

This flour is available easily, but it is not gluten-free. This means it contains the protein “gluten,” which acts as an allergen for some dog breeds. If your dog is gluten allergic, resort to other gluten-free options. This flour is rich in minerals, nutrients, antioxidants, and minerals. These include:

  • Vitamin E and B9
  • Manganese
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Iron
  • Fiber
  • Carbohydrates

Brown Rice Flour

Brown rice flour is made by grinding the unhulled brown rice. This flour type contains fiber elements rich in folate, calcium, and zinc. This flour type is also gluten-free hence perfect for allergic dog breeds. It is a great nutritional alternative to white flour.

Oat Flour

Oat flour is made from grinding oats. The flour is gluten-free, with reduced sugar level and high carbohydrate level. It is great for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Oat flour is rich in copper, antioxidants, iron, vitamin B6, B1, folate, niacin, and zinc. Since it retains moisture, your dog’s treat will come out being moist.

Other whole-grain flours

Following are the other whole grain flour types that you can choose to make your dog’s treats at home.

  • Quinoa
  • Barley
  • Buckwheat
  • Sorghum
  • Pea
  • Millet

Non-Grain Flours

Non Grain flours are suitable for dogs who have a sensitive stomach and can’t seem to digest whole grain flour pretty well. These include:

  • Coconut flour: made from grinding white part of the coconut, the coconut meat. This flour is gluten-free and low in carbs but high in fibers, around 35 to 60%. It decreases the sugar level in the body.
  • Almond flour: made from blanched, finely ground almonds. This flour is cholesterol and gluten-free but rich in polyunsaturated fats. This flour is rich in nutrients and a great option for making dog treats.
  • Chickpea flour: This flour is also known as Garbanzo Beans flour. It is the best option for limited ingredient and grain-free dog treats.
  • Others: other non-grain flours include; potato, hazelnut, and lentil flour.

What Kind of Flours Are Not Suitable For Dogs?

Flour is a common ingredient in many dog food recipes. But all types of flours are not worth adding to your dog’s diet. Therefore, look for the following types of flours and avoid them.

  • White flour: The all-purpose white flour is often used in dog treats but lacks any nutritional value. If you are buying treats, read the description and avoid treats with white flour in them.
  • Corn and soy flour: These flour types often trigger allergic reactions in dogs, particularly in allergic dogs, hence not a suitable option. Even if your dog is not allergic, still avoid these flours.

Conclusion

Can Dogs Eat Flour? Flour is generally safe for dogs, but if yours is displaying some strange symptoms, it might be because of the lactose intolerance in your dog. Such dogs can’t digest the whole wheat flour and end up having an upset stomach. If your allergic dog ends up eating flour, the common symptoms are diarrhea, loss of appetite, and vomiting. Suppose the symptoms are serious; consult a vet. But overall, dogs can eat flour because it is safe.
