Almost all fruits are considered good for the lifestyle of your pets. No matter which fruit you search for, you will find that in small quantities it can still be very good for your dog. Fruits often contain minerals and vitamins you don’t find in things like meat. However, many dog foods try to integrate these nutrients. One question you might have is can dogs eat dried apricots?

Like many other fruits, dried apricots are full of different minerals and nutrients that make them healthy for your pet. However, it is not one of the foods that most dogs prefer. If your dog likes dried apricots, it is a great idea to give it to them. On the other hand, you should never force them to eat it.

  • Low In Calories

If you dry your apricots, you might find that it is low in calories. However, many store-bought apricots have some preservatives added to them. These preservatives can spike calorie content. However, feeding them dried apricots as a snack is great for your dog, especially when it is homemade to keep calories down.

  • Helps Clean The Teeth

Having something dry and chewy is often a great way to clean your dog’s teeth. Since they will be vigorously chewing the fruit, they will remove some of the built-up plaque found on the teeth and this could help freshen their breath. It is a great way to assist in keeping your dog clean if they don’t like dental care.

  • Easy To Give It To Them

One thing people often forget about when thinking of snacks is practicality. Unless you love spending time in the kitchen and chopping up fruit, you might want to find something already packaged and ready to go. Dried apricots are easily accessible and they can be one of the main things you quickly break out as a snack.

You can also add some flavor to some of their meals by adding grated dried apricot over their food. Not only does it make the meal more flavorful, but it can also add more minerals and nutrients to the meal. Since it has plenty of fiber, you can use it to control the calorie intake of your dog and fill them up much faster.

Risks Associated With Dried Apricots For Dogs

Can Dogs Eat Dried Apricots? Unfortunately, there is no perfect fruit or food. While some of them are safer, you will always find that certain foods come with some risks associated. You should look at these risks and consider them before adding them to the dog’s diet. Here are some of the known risks of dried apricots when it comes to dogs:

  • Some Parts Can Be Toxic

It is hard to find studies to back up this claim, but some rumors are circulating that certain parts of the dried apricot can be dangerous for your dog to consume. Some people believe the pits, leaves, and skin can be dangerous for your pet in large quantities. When giving your dog dried apricots, you can simply remove these to reduce the risk of these issues arising.

  • Cyanide

Like many other fruits that contain seeds, cyanide is an ever-present danger you need to consider. While the cyanide found in many of these fruits are trace amounts and do not pose any severe risk, it could build up over time. You should consider this and reduce the number of dried apricots to compensate for this issue.

  • Choking Hazard

Dried apricots can be daunting for you to eat and they can lead to a choking hazard if you are not careful. The flesh is not the easiest part to eat when it has been dried out. If your dog does not thoroughly chew their food, you could be sitting with a choking hazard. Alternatively, you can chop up the dried apricot to ensure that you eliminate the potential choking hazard.

How Many Dried Apricots Can I Feed My Dog?

As mentioned, not all dogs enjoy eating dried apricots and you should never force your dog into eating fruits. There are many different fruits available on the market today that they will enjoy at least one. However, if your dog likes dried apricots, you should consider the right quantity to give them to avoid any risks.

We would recommend that you consult your vet to ensure the organs of your dog are fully functioning, especially in older dogs. When adding dried apricots to their diet, you want to have them finely chopped up and only present them with the flesh. You can allow them to eat the dried apricot until they are done, but don’t overfeed them.

Wrap-Up

Can Dogs Eat Dried Apricots? Dried apricots might not be something you buy every day and some people would even frown upon feeding them to your dog. However, some dogs enjoy dried apricots and you should not withhold your dog from their treats. The best thing you can do is to regulate the intake and to make sure they are not overindulging. Let us know in the comments if your dog likes dried apricots.
