Many dog owners love and want to feed their dogs with all sorts of foods they eat. Can dogs eat dragon fruit? The situation is a bit complicated due to the fact this is an exotic fruit. Luckily for you, we have all the facts you will need and we can give you a detailed answer in no time. You will need 10 minutes to learn all about dragon fruit and can your pet eat it when you are.

Is Dragon Fruit Safe For Dogs?

We always like to start with the basics. Can dogs eat dragon fruit? Yes, they can. There are no toxic ingredients inside and dogs can even get certain benefits. The fruit is loaded with nutrients and vitamins and so much more. It is also sweet so some dogs will love it. The fruit has a different name as well. It is Pitaya so keep in mind that it is the same thing.

There are a few things here you need to keep in mind. The first one is that you have to remove the skin. It is pink and spiky so it is an obvious thing. Don’t feed your pet too much. He can end up with an upset stomach. He can also develop loose stool which can be a huge problem for dogs and their owners.

As always, you need to start with small amounts just to be safe. This is something you need to do with all the new foods you want to add to his diet. The method here is just a precaution and it is mandatory. Some dogs are allergic to certain foods so if they eat a small amount, the reaction will not be very severe. Others can’t tolerate some foods so a small amount is a safe approach once again.

We would like to add that most dogs don’t like dragon fruit. It has too soft, Creamy, and sweet taste for dogs hence they will refuse to eat it. If this is the case with your dog, don’t force him. Respect his choice.

Health Benefits of Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit is loaded with nutrients dogs need and can benefit from them. Here we will explain the main ones and give you more details. Hopefully, you will understand why all of this is important and you will want to share your next dragon fruit with your pet.

  • Iron and Calcium

Dragon fruit has a lot of calcium inside. The mineral is essential for proper bone health, bone formation and so much more. It is also mandatory for proper heart health which is equally important. In addition, calcium will affect blood coagulation, muscle health and so much more.

Iron is another element here that dogs can benefit from. Food that is loaded with iron will boost the production of red blood cells and at the same time promote oxygen and nutrient delivery to the cells.

  • Low On Calories

Dragon fruit is low in calories which is something we always want to see. 3.5 ounces of the fruit will contain only 60 calories. As such, you can add this fruit to his diet and help him lose weight. It is an ideal addition for obese dogs.

  • Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most essential vitamins and the one that all dogs need. However, they can produce Vitamin C so they don’t need too much of it. On the other hand, we can see that adding foods that contain vitamins can have positive effects. The effects come in the form of antioxidants and a stronger immune system.

  • High With Fiber

Dragon fruit is also high in fiber that can promote bowel movement of your pet and help him get the cholesterol down. Keep in mind that only 3.5 ounces of the fruit will contain 1.8 grams of fiber hence feeding him in small amounts is mandatory.

  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Dragon fruit is high in omega 3 fatty acids and especially omega 6 fatty acids or linoleic acid. These will have a positive effect on his brain, overall health, and also on the skin. In general, this is one of the main advantages dragon fruit has to offer.

  • Red Dragon Fruit

As you can assume, dogs can eat red dragon fruit. These are more common in Central and South America. We like the presence of potassium, fiber, vitamin C, and other nutrients in it.

  • Pink Dragon Fruit

White meat and pink exterior are the things we all know about this fruit. You can find this fruit easily and it is safe for all dogs.

  • Yellow Dragon Fruit

All dogs can eat yellow dragon fruit. You will find it in South America and also in some grocery stores. This type comes with black seeds, yellow skin, and white flesh. An interesting fact is that this type has more vitamin C than any other dragon fruit which is great.

  • Purple Dragon Fruit

Yes, dogs can eat purple dragon fruit as well. This type is high in beta carotene which has a positive effect on the eyes of your pet. It is also high with folate and has antioxidant benefits.

The Final Word

Can dogs eat dragon fruit? As you were able to see, yes they can and your pet will get a lot of perks if you feed him dragon fruit. Just keep in mind that he needs to eat small amounts of it and you have to remove the skin. On the other hand, most types of dragon fruit are safe for dogs and your pet can consume these on a weekly basis. This is an addition to the diet and not something you should use all the time.
