All dog owners need to know that certain foods for dogs are bad despite the fact they are great for humans. As such, the foods you eat may not be a wise option to give to your pet. Can dogs eat artichokes? Today we will answer this question. Many people like artichokes and they want to share them with their dogs. Should you do it and are there some facts to know? Yes, there are a few things we must reveal here.

Can You Feed Dog Artichokes?

Let’s start with a simple answer and one that you will want to know as soon as possible. Can dogs eat artichokes? Yes, you can feed your dog artichokes and there won’t be any issues. This is delicious food that we all like hence your dog may like these as well. Some dogs will like these while others will refuse to eat. There are not a lot of things you can do about that.

You may believe that artichokes are fruit or vegetables. They are not. These are a part of the thistle plant and the edible part is actually a flower bud that comes in the shape of a globe. It is edible before the flower blooms. After that, it is inedible and very tough.

Always remember that Jerusalem artichokes and globe artichokes are not the same. In the first case, the part you can eat is root or tuber and these come in countless variations. Just to clarify. Here we will discuss and explain all about globe artichokes.

You Can Prepare Artichokes By Yourself, Which Is Ideal

Now is the time to know how you should give artichokes to your pet. This is not a type of food you can give in raw form. But, you can prepare these for your pet. You can boil or steam these and feed your dog with them. In this case scenario, there won’t be any additives, preservatives, or oils that can be harmful to dogs.

In other words, this is the safest and the most delicious way for a dog to consume artichokes. Just make sure that your pet will eat in moderation. All foods can be bad if your pet eats a lot of them.

Tinned artichokes are available as well. Although, more affordable and an easier method you can opt for, this is not great. There are a few issues here you will want to avoid. The first one is the presence of oils. Then we have salt and we can also find all sorts of additives and preservatives in the food. Some of these can be very dangerous to your pet and they can cause all sorts of issues. There is no need to add that some of these can be fatal or cause severe health complications.

The bottom line is simple. If you want your dog to eat artichokes, you will need to boil or steam them and feed your pet. All other options are not ideal and they are something you will probably want to avoid.

Nutrients In Artichokes

Artichokes are a very healthy type of food and your pet can benefit from them. We can see a lot of vitamins, minerals, and all other nutrients that pets need and a diet must provide. Here are a few nutrients that artichokes (100 grams) are loaded with.

  • Energy: 47kcal
  • Fat: 0.15g
  • Carbohydrate: 10.5g
  • Fiber 5.4g
  • Protein: 3.27g

These are just some of many. We can also see a lot of vitamins E, K, C, B6, etc. Your dog will also get access to zinc, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, and niacin. Add the antioxidants and we have food that will provide your dog with a lot of mandatory nutrients. All of this means that your pet will have a stronger immune system, better muscle growth and better growth in general, improved metabolic function and so much more.

Artichokes also contain water. 100 grams of the food will contain 84.9 g of water which is great during the summer. Your pet will stay hydrated and prevent the risk of heatstroke or dehydration in general.

Introducing Artichokes To Dog’s Diet

Some of you will know that when you add a new food to the diet of your pet you need to do it slowly. Others will believe that you can add any new food to the diet in any amount and it is the right method to go for.

Every single time when you want to add something to the diet of your dog, you need to do it slowly. Start with a slice or two and monitor the situation. Some dogs can be allergic to certain foods and they can end up with an upset stomach, diarrhea and so much more. This is unlikely to happen with artichokes but be careful.

You will have to prepare artichokes for your pet and feed him in small amounts. Make sure these never contribute more than 10% of the total diet. This is the total amount treats should and can contribute to the diet and 90% must be proper food. Dog food with all the nutrients is the main element here. Artichokes are a treat!

If your pet really likes artichokes, you can use them as a reward or prepare them occasionally so your pet will enjoy more. Dogs who don’t like the taste or artichokes will need a different type of treat. Try to remember that some dogs will need time to accept artichokes. What this means is that they may refuse them at first but soon they will start eating.

The Final Word

Can dogs eat artichokes? The short answer is yes. All dogs can eat artichokes but in moderation and as a part of the treat only. These are not something dogs can eat as the main part of the diet or have a whole meal consisting of artichokes only. When you use these as treats, your dog can experience a lot of benefits that are impressive. Of course, this applies to dogs who like to eat artichokes. Luckily many of them do.
