Many people believe that breeding between brother and sister dogs is the same as incest and it is illegal. In reality, this is perfectly legal and actually commonly used these days. Can brother and sister dogs have puppies? Yes, they can and it is usually much easier for breeders to achieve this because two dogs already know each other. However, the topic is far more complex so we will need a lot more words to explain it.

Can brother and sister dogs have puppies and why do some breeders use this?

Can brother and sister dogs have puppies or this is impossible? The answer is yes. In this case scenario, we are looking at inbreeding and it has been used by certain breeders. They believe that when dogs from one litter mate, their puppies are better examples of the parents. As such, breeders can expect well-known traits. Keep in mind that the same term is used when mating between any related dogs occurs such as father/daughter, mother/son and etc.

Certain breeders believe that if you have two dogs of excellent appearance and excellent behavior and you breed them, you will get puppies of enhanced traits. In other words, puppies will have a great appearance, they should be smart and they should have well-known behavior. If we take a deep look into this, we can see that only the strongest genes will be passed on puppies and that this is an excellent way to make a breed stronger.

Many breeders use this process because they want to get excellent puppies without looking for an ideal mate and they will know what to expect. Also, theoretically, it should decrease the risk from a stud who has bad genes.

Inbreeding is perfectly legal and in nature, it happens more often than you may believe. Most countries around the globe don’t regulate this and don’t have any laws or rules. Some countries leave it to the breeders or dog owners to make up their minds.

Dogs who are brother and sister will still get want to mate when the time comes due to the fact they don’t have the moral traits of humans and their instincts are too high. Dogs from the same parents but from different litters can mate as well. The situation is almost the same as when brother and sister mate.

Breeding brother and sister dogs: Possible issues

By now you may believe that breeding brother and sister dogs is fine and actually something that all breeders should do. In reality, this isn’t always the case and most experts recommend breeders not to do this. It has more bad sides than advantages.

First of all, dogs may still have bad genes or some health-related issues that will become even more pronounced on puppies. It is mandatory to have a full genetic risk assessment before you try this process. It is more than just common that inbred dogs have severe issues with liver, heart, and also hip dysplasia.

The second issue is a smaller gene pool. What this means is that when you breed these dogs, the number of genes present will be significantly decreased compared to the normal breeding process. Not only has this had a bad effect on the evolution of dogs, but can also make certain dogs more affected by countless issues. For instance, Great Danes suffer from bloat which is extremely common. They also have a very short life span of 8-10 years. If these dogs are inbred, bloat can become an extremely common disorder and a huge issue. Simply said, there are no enough healthy genes that will decrease the risk of bloat. The situation is the same with all dog breeds.

Furthermore, inbreeding can cause one huge issue. It can lead to the extinction of one or multiple genes in a breed. This means the aforementioned issue is even more likely and more severe. Some say that this is dangerous for the whole species.

There are a lot of possible issues. First of all, puppies may be more aggressive, less intelligent and they may be impossible to train. Physical abnormalities are still present and in some cases, they can be severe. Last but not least important fact is that these puppies usually have a weaker immune system. Breeders know that these puppies may get seriously ill from a common allergy or infection which doesn’t have severe effects on ordinary dogs.

Should you breed related dogs?

As you were able to see, breeding brother and sister dogs is allowed, it is almost everywhere legal and it can have some advantages. This is used to pass certain traits down the line. So, should you use this?

The answer is much more complicated than you may believe. The best thing to do is to find a stud or to breed unrelated dogs. This is the healthiest and still the safest thing to do. If you want to pass one or multiple traits down the line, then breeding brother and sister dogs is definitely an option.

Before you proceed, you need to talk to a vet and see all the pros and all risks of this process. It is mandatory to perform a complete genetic check of both dogs just to be positive there are no severe complications with some of the genes and severe diseases and conditions won’t occur.

Even then, this is a complicated process and requires a lot of preparation. Unless you are an expert, it isn’t advised to continue with this. If you really want to breed brother and sister dogs, you may need professional help.

Conclusion

Can brother and sister dogs have puppies and will they be healthy? Yes, they can have puppies and in most cases, their puppies will be healthy. This is not the same as incest in people! However, there are bad sides to this process and you need to know about them before you start with inbreeding. For some breeders, it is best to avoid this process.
