When you decide to move to a new location or new apartment, along with other decisions, you also need to make an important decision about your beloved friend. Don’t worry; apartments don’t restrict all dog breeds, but some dogs are typically restricted from the apartment. So, if you don’t know about breeds typically restricted from apartments, then this guide is for you.

What Are Apartment Breed Restrictions?

Before we share a list of restricted dog breeds in apartments, let’s find what apartment breed restrictions are? These are the rules set by many apartment buildings. These rules prohibit the entry of certain dog breeds due to various reasons.

Generally, dogs that are considered unsuitable for apartment living are restricted from apartments. For example, apartments do not allow dangerous, noisy, large, and uncontrollable dog breeds.

Moreover, in some apartment complexes, you’ll see restrictions based on dogs’ age, size, and exercise needs. Property managers can choose what dog breeds they want to allow in their apartments. But the good news is service, and emotional support dogs are exempted from apartment restrictions.

Why Do Apartments Impose Breed Restrictions?

As mentioned earlier, they impose breed restrictions due to several reasons. They mainly restrict dog breeds because of safety. They prohibit dogs that are dangerous for people and other pets living around. Moreover, these dog breeds are larger than other dogs. Therefore, when they attack someone, there are chances of severe injuries.

Moreover, apartment owners ban some dog breeds based on destructive behaviors like scratching, clawing, digging, and chewing. Larger dog breeds can cause more structural damage than smaller dog breeds. Landlords want to prevent their property from damage; therefore, you’ll see pet fees in the contract.

Apartments ban some dog breeds because of insurance issues. Apartments owners get insurance, and they get coverage for property damages. But the insurance companies prefer apartments that have imposed breed restrictions. Due to these reasons, it’s not easy to find apartments for some dog breeds.

Dog Breeds Typically Restricted From Apartments

10 Dog Breeds Typically Restricted from Apartments

Many dog breeds are restricted from apartments, but the below-given are mostly banned in all apartments. So, let’s have a look at the ten most common restricted dog breeds.

  • Rottweilers

Initially, these dogs were bred to pull heavy carts and herd cattle. They have also been used as search and rescue, guard, and police dogs in recent times. They’re known as muscular and strong dogs, and their weight is between 80 to 140 pounds. They’re restricted from apartments because of their size and weight. But pet owners claim that Rottweilers are gentle dogs.

  • Akitas

These dogs originated in Japan, and initially, they were used for hunting wild boar and bears. They can be intimidating and fierce around strangers. Therefore, people love to use them as watchdogs. When they interact with other dogs, they try to be dominant. Apartments restrict these dogs because of their aggressive behavior.

  • Doberman Pinschers

Due to their tenacity and strength, they have been a popular choice for people as guard dogs. Moreover, some people have used them as police dogs as well. Due to their aggressive and violent behavior, they have been on the apartments’ banned list. Otherwise, when you properly train them, they can be loving companions.

  • Great Danes

They’re among the largest dog breeds, and initially, they were bred to hunt boar in Germany. When they stand on their legs, they can reach a height of even more than 7 feet. Therefore, many landlords consider Great Danes as mini horses.

Moreover, they are loud barkers and not suitable for apartment living. When we talk about personality, they’re one of the goofiest dog breeds. But their size and weight put them on the list of restricted dog breeds from apartments.

  • Siberian Huskies

These dogs originated in Siberia, Russia. They have thick fur coats that allow them to withstand and enjoy cold and snowy weather. Now, you might be wondering why they’re restricted from apartments.  Landlords restrict them because of their very vocal and high energy levels.

  • Pit Bull

They were bred as fighting dogs. Therefore, they’re involved in more dog bites and attacks than any other dog breed. They’re highly trainable, courageous, and tenacious. But their large size and negative reputation of fighting dogs put them on the list of banned dogs from apartments.

  • German Shepherds

German Sheperds are known as intelligent working dogs. You’ll see lots of German Shepherds as police dogs. Therefore, they have a negative reputation as aggressive dogs. Their aggressive nature puts them on the list of restricted dog breeds.

  • English Mastiffs

They’re used as guard dogs. They can be calm and loving companions. But landlords don’t allow them in their apartments because of their immense size and weight.

  • Chow-Chow

Their name looks funny, but actually, they’re very serious dogs. They’re known for being very territorial. They’re serious-minded and dignified dog breeds. Apartment owners banned them because they can be dangerous for people living around them.

  • Dalmatians

Initially, they were assigned a task to guard stables at night. But now, they are regarded as spokes dogs and mascots. They don’t get aggressive, but they’re still restricted from apartments.

What to Do If Your Dog Is Restricted from Apartments?

If your pet belongs to restricted dog breeds, apartment owners won’t allow them to enter their apartment buildings. But, if your pet is well-behaved, you can get past these breed restrictions. So, follow the below-given tips and overcome the apartment breed restrictions.

  • Be honest, and don’t hide your dog. If you do that, it can put you in legal trouble.
  • Create a dog resume and mention all traits of your dog. Mention that your dog is well-behaved and well-trained, and it will not cause damage to property or people living around.
  • Share references of other people to describe the good attributes of your pet. For example, you can provide references of groomers, trainers, and pet sitters.
  • Get pet liability insurance coverage and remove concerns of renter’s insurance.
  • Prioritize Training: Early and consistent training is vital. Teach your dog basic commands like sit, stay, and come. This not only helps with behavior but also establishes trust and understanding between you and your pet.
  • Socialization: Expose your dog to different situations, sounds, and people. The more they’re used to, the less likely they are to react negatively or become stressed in unfamiliar situations.
  • Noise Management: Dogs, especially misunderstood breeds, can get startled with sudden loud noises common in apartment complexes. Consider using white noise machines or soft music to mask outside sounds.
  • Communication with Neighbors: Introduce your dog to your neighbors. This can help reduce misconceptions they might have about your dog’s breed and foster understanding.
  • Stay Updated with Veterinary Care: Regular vet check-ups ensure your dog is healthy. A well-taken-care-of dog is generally a happier and better-behaved dog.

So, these are the dog breeds typically restricted from apartments. Follow the tips mentioned above and get past breed restrictions.

Conclusion

When it comes to “Dog Breeds Typically Restricted From Apartments”, it’s essential to understand that these restrictions often arise from generalized misconceptions. While certain breeds might face limitations due to their size or perceived behavior, it doesn’t mean they can’t make wonderful, peaceful apartment dwellers.

With the right training, care, and open communication with property managers and neighbors, even breeds on the restricted list can thrive in apartment settings. Every dog deserves a chance to show its individual temperament, and with a little effort, your loyal companion can fit seamlessly into apartment living, regardless of their breed.
