Training dogs to mold their temperament can be tedious yet engaging and fun. Whether you’re a certified dog trainer or need to coach one with amateur or no skills, you must use progressive and involving training for your pooch. Dogs are active and intelligent and can develop undesirable traits with minimal or no training – and changing these behaviors can be strenuous. Here are the five simple dog training tips that will change your dog.

5 Dog Training Tips That Will Transform Your Dog

1. Use Positive Reinforcement Training

Positive reinforcement gets your dog to understand how you appreciate their good behavior. Once your dog realises you commend specific actions while denouncing others, they’ll automatically change for the better. Dogs learn fast and love little appreciations, so they’ll do everything to win your attention—and, of course, get a go at the treats. However, you must be consistent with this type of training in addition to being patient with your dog. Use consistent words to signal an action, since varying them baffles your dog.

It would help if you also made good timing with the rewards, or else, you’ll appreciate your dog for doing something you dislike. If they do something good, reward them a few seconds later to associate the reward with the action. Besides, be brief with your commands and avoid using long sentences or phrases that confuse your dog.

2. Harness The Potential of Training Games

Training your dog using basic and concise commands can be effective, but have you tried training games? Just so you should know, training your pooch with training games fosters a great relationship with your dog and imprints the principles and habits that you desire. Besides, training games induce impulse control and build patience. Therefore, use games that subject them to tremendous patience and perseverance. Here are three effective training games you should use.

  • Walking leave it – pioneered by Sophia Yin

Your dog may be boundless when walking them in the park, and they’d grab everything to show their enthusiasm. While it may be exciting for your dog, it can be not very pleasant if they pick things that could intoxicate them. To change this behavior, walking leave it’ is an enjoyable challenge to get your dog to turn over a new leaf.

Unlock Your Dog’s Full Potential with Brain Training for Dogs

Whenever your dog tries reaching an object on a leash, throw treats on the opposite side beyond their reach. Instinctively, they’ll start straining towards the reward rather than the object, so hold on till they remain calm and stare at you. When they’re all relaxed, let them get to the treat.

  • SMART x 50 – pioneered by Kathy Sdao

This training game molds your dog’s behavior to enable them to conduct themselves decently around the house. Put a few treats on your dog’s treat pouch and observe them without asking them to do anything while you’re running errands in the house. If they do something right naturally or instinctively, commend them and reward the behavior with a treat.

  • Look at that!

This game is ideal for leash reactive and nervous dogs when walking them. Such dogs become unsettled when they sight distractive things, including other dogs or park squirrels. While on walks, carry treats with you to pull your dogs from distractions as rewards for maintaining calmness. When they focus on perturbing objects, click with your tongue and let them calm down before giving them a treat.

3. Start New Training Sessions In A Quiet Environment

Starting new training sessions needs proper transitioning that rewires your dog’s brain for more unique challenges. Doing this breaks the monotony of learning a single action, while doing the opposite keeps them in the loop and confuses them. Besides, distractions in clamorous settings pull their attention and focus away from the training, thus making it complicated.

The Smart Dog Parent Bundle

An excellent alternative to starting new training sessions in quiet environments is to change the setting entirely. It’s okay if there’s a little noise, but make sure it doesn’t distract. For instance, if your dog is used to training in the park with tremendous clattering, take them to the driveway where it’s less busy. Completely altering the setting recaptures and rewires your dog’s brain, putting them in the mood for a new challenge.

4. Don’t Overwhelm Your Dog With Cumbersome Training

A dog’s concentration span is short-lived, and extending training for hours creates room for mistakes. Dogs get bored so fast when you subject them to cumbersome training sessions, and they’re likely to stop responding to your commands or following simple instructions—even if it means sacrificing tasty treats. Eventually, you’ll be left with a stubborn and defiant dog.

For adult dogs, try limiting the sessions to fifteen minutes tops. Or, if possible, make them brief and quick so they do not go beyond ten minutes. For puppies, make them shorter and not exceed five minutes. You can also alternate these sessions with refreshing breaks to make them more effective and engaging.

5. End The Training With What Your Dog Already Understands

The last tip out of our five simple dog training tips that will change your dog is ending training sessions on a positive note. At the end of every training session, use what the dog understands or has already learned to wind up positively. Instruct them to do something they love or already know before giving them a fulfilling treat.

Another way to end the session in high spirits is by using a clicker to reward your dog for something they’ve recently learned. Although clicker training is a sole method to coach your dog for desirable behavior in itself, it can be effective, especially if they’re already used to it.

Ending training sessions positively also helps dogs relate well to you. Besides, it leaves them expecting another training session for more fun and learning new things. You don’t want the endings to be lackluster such that it makes them repulsive to subsequent training sessions.
